It should be ready in February: The Lonestar project wants to shoot the first data center on the moon at all. In it, a song by the band Imagine Dragons is to be saved.

  • The Lonestar company plans to bring the “Freedom” data center to the moon as part of the intuitive machines IM-2 mission in February 2025.
  • The data center will have around eight terabyte capacity. The goal is to establish a place to secure critical data outside of the earth.
  • In the future, more data centers are planned on the moon.

Data centers are available on earth like sand by the sea. After all, the millions of gigabytes of data that are processed and exchanged every day in the world can be stored somewhere. On the other hand, there has been no need on the moon – until now. Because this month Lonestar wants to set up the first data center on the largest earth satellite. We present how this should work and what goals the project has.

As part of the Lonestar project, Lonestar Data Holdings plans to install the first data center on the moon in February 2025. For this purpose, the “Freedom” data center is brought to the moon together with the moonlander Athena at the intuitive machines IM-2 mission using a Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX. The US space agency NASA also participates in this – it is one of the most important moon missions this year.

What is the Lonestar project and who is behind it?

The “Freedom” data center is a compact system equipped with SSD memory that offers storage space for around eight terabytes of data. The operation takes place using solar systems that are attached to the device; The cooling is carried out by a special technology that uses the atmospheric conditions of the moon for a passive heat exchange.

US state of Florida and Imagine Dragons as previous partners

The aim of the project as a whole is to create a secure location for securing critical data outside the earth. The focus is on “emergency restoration and storage of critical data”, as the company explains.

So far, however, only a few partners have been involved in the project. Among other things, the governments of the US state of Florida and the Isle of Man (this is the small island between Ireland and Great Britain), the pop rock band Imagine Dragons and the AI company Valkyrie have so far participated in the Lonestar project. A song that has never been played live on the data center will be saved by the band Imagine Dragons. After the successful start, this should be streamed live to earth. Lonestar would like to shoot even more data centers on the moon in 2026 and 2027 and thus recruit more and other partners – provided that the project is running.

When does the project start and can you follow it live?

The start of the Falcon 9 rocket, which is supposed to bring the Mission Intuitive Machines IM-2 and thus the Freedom data center to the moon, starts on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 1:02 a.m. German time (26.02.2025 19: 02 a.m. EST) from John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA has already sent out invitations to press accreditation – so it is likely that the start of the rockets will be tracked live on the Internet. Where exactly is still unclear.
