some bad news Alice: Madness Returns Fans, as creator America McKee says, the proposal for a new game has been rejected.
In a new Patreon post from American McGee titled “The End of Adventure,” the creator of the cult classic series shared the news that fans shouldn’t expect a new game, as EA rejected any possible sequels. McGee set up Patreon to fund a design bible for Alice: Mental Asylum, a hypothetical sequel he’s built over the past few years. However, EA declined to finance the sequel, according to McGee’s post.
“After weeks of review, EA has responded to the funding and/or licensing of Alice: Asylum,” the post read. “On the funding issue, they ultimately decided to drop the project based on an internal analysis of the IP, market conditions, and details of the production proposal. On the licensing issue, they responded that Alice was a big part of it.” EA’s Overall Gameplay Cataloging, and selling or licensing it is not something they are prepared to do right now. ”
Essentially, EA doesn’t seem to think it can make money from the project if it makes money by funding it directly (the lack of permission is probably also about money, as is the case with all things). McGee went on to explain that because of EA’s response, “there’s no other way forward for the project,” which means the Patreon page has gone dormant. You can still view content shared on Patreon, but no more in the future.
McGee also noted that with this, he also reached the end of “Alice” and game production in general. I have no other ideas or energy to devote to making a new Alice game. I also have no interest in pursuing ideas for new games in the context of the current game development environment. He also wrote that even if someone managed to convince EA to make Asylum, he was no longer interested and all the attention was on his family and their company, Mysterious, which made for a series of things including some that were honestly quite Rabbit plush toy.
An unfortunate end to a series that was beloved by fans, but oddly enough will live on as a TV series. I guess EA is happy to license it under certain circumstances.
