Battlefield 7 is back in the news and even shares a first official image with us. The news is great and fans will be excited about what has just been announced. Very nice promises.
When Call of Duty is ubiquitous thanks to free-to-play War zone and its annual episodes, the other big war FPS license is no less popular. Battlefield, EA’s juggernaut, may have tripped over itself with BF 2042, but it’s not dead yet. A Battlefield 7 is in the works and the game just gave us news with a first conceptual image that already makes us hungry.
What we like about Battlefield is the all-out warfare aspect. Something 2042 forgot a little when it tried to make a big deal by offering huge maps where up to 128 players could happily play in each other’s faces. There’s a cold shower on reception. Too smart, too clean, too messy and too buggy – Battlefield 2042 has its fans, but there aren’t many of them. Worse, at launch the game pushes players to jump on BF1 and BF5, with the latter two episodes being significantly superior in almost every way.
Change of direction with Battlefield 7, it is confirmed
With Battlefield 7 we stop the costs. We forget about the 128 players, the huge but empty maps and the famous specialists who couldn’t contribute anything to the whole. Fun is good, but players know how to find it on their own in a BF without having to force themselves with wingsuits, flying antics or anything like that. “Back to basics”, “Players know what they want”. These are the words of Vince Zampella, responsible for Battlefield 7.
The beautiful promises begin, and this time we’d rather believe Zampella’s words, since the beatings in Battlefield 2042 have left their mark. And this even if the man tries to downplay the matter by claiming that BF 2042 is neither a failure nor a bad game. If we can grant him the second point (no, BF 2042 is actually not a bad game), it’s difficult not to call it a failure knowing that the game has spent the last few years completely reworking its copy. We’ll see if the studio has learned from past mistakes. For now, on paper, we are promised a Battlefield 7 that will represent a return to basics on all levels.
A return to the essentials announced and a first conceptual image
In the IGN columns, Vince Zampella reported some details of the game, with a first conceptual image under his arm. We see a city in flames, helicopters and smoke in the background, a large fire on the right flank… all-out war once again. It’s impossible to know where exactly we are, and Zampella doesn’t want to say, preferring to save that for later. All we know is that Battlefield 7 will be anchored in the modern age, without trying to address any near or distant future.
“If you look at the heyday of Battlefield, it was the Battlefield 3…Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern.”
Smaller maps, distance from specialists…
A return to the golden age of Battlefield for this seventh installment? That’s a big yes! But it won’t stop there, because BF7 will also mean the end of gigantic maps that no one has exploited and that prefer to be clustered in the same places.
“Yes, the 128 players, was that more fun? There’s no point in getting bigger just to be bigger. » Martèle Zampella. « […] Once they reach a certain scale, the maps start to differ. It’s a different game space and I think that needs to be taken into account in the design. That’s why we’re preparing something that’s more reminiscent of previous Battlefields.”.
We are therefore entitled to more limited maps than in 2042, and that’s all the better. But that doesn’t mean we’ll have fewer options or fewer tasks, definitely not. Vince Zampella, on the other hand, wants to reduce the size of the maps, but make them more interesting. “I prefer nice playgrounds, dense, really beautiful and well designed. Some of them are really good. I can’t wait for you to discover them »
Battlefield 7 would therefore obviously be a real return to basics. The specialists disappear, the classes return, the maps shrink but become denser… As IGN points out, this would be a question of “a classic Battlefield, but much bigger” and ” ambitious “ than in the days of Battlefield 3 and 4.
Battlefield 7 will revive the franchise!
Battlefield 7 is definitely in full development. Very active production even began a little earlier this year and no fewer than four studios are working on it: DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect and Criterion. As a reminder, EA has even stated several times that the Battlefield franchise would enter a new era. For the publisher, this is one of the most ambitious projects in history.
Vince Zampella was asked about this, but he remained evasive. It’s definitely about building more on what Battlefield is. “We need to keep the core. Battlefield players know what they want. They’ve always been with us, they’ve been incredible supporters. We need to earn their trust and get them back on our side. Then it’s about expanding, bringing more players into the universe and seeing what we can do.”.
Battlefield 7 won’t be released anytime soon, but EA is preparing a community program for next year, so it could be that the game is coming soon.
