League of Legends is doing everything it can for its 14th season. A great movie, very big changes for the game and surprises for Arcane fans, without forgetting a super cute new champion.
League of Legends needs no introduction, everyone knows the MOBA at least by name, just like Fortnite. The game is now in its 14th year and yes, it is huge and always crowded. Every year the game undergoes a major update to revitalize its formula, increase interest and attract new players. This year, in 2024, it is even more. The start of the 2024 season, or S14, is an opportunity for Riot Games to seriously step into the anthill by making a slew of announcements in addition to bringing a huge update to the breach. Even Arcane fans will love it.
League of Legends is doing everything it can for the 2024 season!
After getting a little lost with the launch of previous seasons, Riot decided to go all out for this season, and it kicks off with a pretty incredible cinematic that adds even more backstory to the universe and raises a few goosebumps along the way. We see Kayle and Morgana face Aatrox, an older Yasuo defending a village with crazy class, or even Tryndamere in a very bad position, narrowly saved by a sublime Ashe who will help him face the Kindred hidden in the darkness to oppose. There is nothing to say about this animation sequence by the French studio Unit Image. The video was a hit on YouTube and the feedback was excellent.
Arcane fans will be in heaven
League of Legends is much more than just a MOBA, it has become a truly ultra-rich, expanded universe. From now on everything is canon, so lovers of the license swallow everything that is directly or indirectly related to the universe. The Riot Forge games, the narrative cutscenes and especially Arcane, the Netflix series animated by the Fortiche studio. The game and the series are now connected and closer than ever before. Arcane writes the origins of several of the game’s heroes such as Jinx, Vi, Jayce or even Viktor from the Piltover region and Zaun, but also creates new memorable characters.
For the first time ever, one of its characters will land in the Rift as a playable champion. This is Ambessa Medarda, the mother of Mel Medarda, whom she herself banished to Piltover long before the events of Arcane. The Noxian Warlord will therefore arrive in League of Legends later this year. We don’t know anything about her kit or role, but it’s pretty easy to imagine her as a top lane fighter.
Speaking of the series, you certainly haven’t forgotten that Arcane Season 2 has been confirmed and will be released in November this year. On the occasion of the release of the new season of League of Legends, Riot Games took the opportunity to release a new trailer for the next season of Arcane. We discover Singed, the mad scientist who creates a creature well known to fans of the game: Warwick. Suffice it to say, the hype is real.
With the next big patch a new, super cute champion will appear!
Still a new hero, but this time we know who it is. The little dragon Smolder will arrive in the Rift soon. Designed for the bottom lane, this shooter is a cute little creature that can summon its mother, an Ancestral Dragon, to set a large area on fire with its ultimate ability. An atypical character who develops over the course of the game. Riot claimed to have included a lot of visual and audio details to give us a real sense of power. Smolder will be released in the next major patch.
It is currently in testing on the PBE. Recently, it was the magician Hwei who joined the fight. A painter who can use no fewer than 10 skills. The least we can say is that Riot is working hard to find new ways to play. Not easy when you already have over 160 playable heroes.
A lot of changes for the new year, new map, new gameplay…
In addition to these numerous announcements, it’s good to remember that this new season also brings with it a ton of new features. The Rift, League of Legends’ main map, is changing. While this is very rare, it has happened in the past. The jungle opens new paths on the lower and upper corridors, and tall grass appears in both rivers. There’s also a rework on both sides of the mid lane, which will certainly open up new opportunities for junglers on both sides.
Speaking of the jungle, the monster camps will be modified again and some creatures will transform at a certain stage of the game. Baron Nashor’s Hideout also underwent a major overhaul. The latter now has several variants that, in addition to changing its abilities, will also change the topography of the area. In addition, Void Larvae will take possession of the location before the Herald of the Rift appears. A new point of interest that provides some statistical advantages to the team that controls it.
The changes can also be found in the item system, which has been revised again. Basically, this is a new XXL balancing. Mythic items and associated bonuses have (FINALLY!) disappeared and for the few survivors they have all been rebalanced. New items are also appearing and will certainly change the meta we found at the end of Season 13. Riot really wants to put more emphasis on champions and make items easy… items. Although we tended to choose heroes based on the most broken objects at the moment. Let’s see what this does over time.
Another change concerns the ranking system itself. From now on, the year will be divided into several ranking seasons to offer players more luck, but also to revitalize the lines. Champion Championships and overall experience progression are also items that are changing this season. Full details of these changes can be found in the extensive 14.1 patch notes and on the official League of Legends website.
As a reminder, League of Legends is a completely free game only available on PC via the official website. As an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you will also find a shortcut to the game in the PC catalog and benefit from a number of bonuses: all unlocked champions, some skins and especially account XP bonuses.
