Battlefield 2042 Developer DICE kicked off the new year with an unusual Twitter post. After a disappointing launch, 2021 ended the beleaguered game on a hopeful note after the studio quickly deployed four patches to address several major issues.
With DICE and much of the world on holiday, more of Battlefield 2042’s core design issues surfaced and became the biggest talking points. Despite a free weekend and sales almost everywhere, the game continues to lose players. In some ways, Battlefield 5 has more active players on Steam than the latest game.
This all leads to a frustrated community waiting for some kind of communication from DICE on how the studio plans, or in fact, plans to address the game’s long list of issues. But no one expected the first official word to be about, well, legends!
The official Battlefield Twitter account has posted a new entry for Battlefield World, a series of articles about the events leading up to the game’s main conflict, helping to flesh out its novel and world.

This latest post appears to showcase environments that aren’t currently in the game, and can be generously considered a trailer for the new map. While not necessarily limited to in-game maps, most lore posts revolve around existing locations in some way.
Unfortunately, this isn’t what players have always wanted to see, which highlights a problem with the form of communication that EA and DICE have chosen. While it’s unrealistic to expect a solid roadmap or even news of upcoming content at the start of the year, it would be better if the first announcement contained more solid information.
Still, both EA and DICE know they have a lot of work to do in 2022 if Battlefield 2042 has a future.
