What Mario is for Nintendo, the cute Astro Bot could be for Sony. His third adventure will be released exclusively on PlayStation 5 in September, and now Team Asobi has released fresh information.
In an interview, Astro Bot’s creative director, Nicolas Douce, spoke in more detail about the game’s playing time, number of levels and possible support for PlayStation VR 2. After all, the little robot’s first appearance, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, was an exclusive title for Sony’s first VR headset.

However, this is where the first big rejection comes from Team Asobi. Astro Bot will not offer support for the PlayStation VR 2, and this is what Douce explains. According to him, this decision was made from the beginning and a hybrid solution would not be an option either, as it would mean losing too much quality. Instead, the focus is on an all-round successful platforming experience.
The developers promise a wide variety of fun levels, with over 80 of them in total. That’s an impressive number, but according to the studio, Astro Bot is a pleasantly bite-sized game in terms of playing time. The jump-and-run game should only keep you busy for 12 to 15 hours, depending on your level of completionist.
Another interesting detail is that Asobi had actually thought about an open world at the beginning. But this idea was discarded in favor of control and variety. As in Astro’s Playroom, the DualSense controller naturally plays an important role; for example, Douce mentions the haptic feedback as a feature that was put a lot of focus on.
We will find out how well all these elements work together on September 6, 2024. That is the day the game will be released exclusively on the PlayStation 5. If we can believe our colleague Basti, we are in for a very good jump-and-run game at the very least. In his preview of Astro Bot, he wrote: “Design, quality, precision and fun factor are certainly on a similar level to the competition. Maybe even a little too similar.”
