Apparently, summer in this country has decided to simply start in May. Here in Munich, people are already flocking to the banks of the Isar, munching ice cream, splashing around in the water – but there are at least four and a half reasons at the weekend to spend a few hours indoors, because there are five games on Steam, Epic and in Ubisoft Connect (aka Uplay). for free! As always, some of these will be given away permanently.
So why only four and a half instead of five recommendations? Because Out of Reach: Treasure Royale seems to be quite a multiplayer pickle, unfortunately. The pirate battle royale looks really chic on the screenshots, but currently only has 13 active players worldwide. Since a full match will probably be harder to find than Treasure Island or Big Whoop.
But let’s talk about the highlight of the week first.
Highlight of the week: The Division 2

The Division 2 – Test video for the exemplary loot shooter
Genre: Loot-Shooter | developer: Massive | Release: February 7, 2019 | GameStar rating: 88 | Free to play until: 15. May 2022
The Division 2 lives again! Or at least more than in the last 12 months, because with Season 9 the game gets its first real content update since the (pretty cool) addon Warlords of New York
. And about the new content expansion Hidden Alliance
to promote, Ubisoft lets you play the main game completely free until May 15, 2022.
Of course, the basic formula of The Division 2 hasn’t changed over the years: you can move solo or in co-op through a sprawling Washington to shoot down all sorts of terrorist militias, bag a lot of loot and advance the outrageously flat story. But The Division 2 isn’t played for the story, it’s played for the still outstanding cover shooter gameplay.
So if you don’t have any plans for the weekend: gather your loved ones and treat yourself to a few hours of action.
Where to play for free
To activate The Division 2 Free Weekend, you must log in to Ubisoft Connect (i.e. Uplay) and download the game there. Then start and off you go.
Steam & Epic: These 4 games will be given away permanently
If you’re not in the mood for The Division 2, don’t worry: there are four other free games on Epic and Steam – and they’re all being given away permanently. So you activate them once and keep them in your library until the end of the internet. Let’s go through the candidates.
- Prey: One of the coolest sci-fi shooters of the last 10 years im Epic Store given away. Whereby sci-fi shooter falls short: As a so-called immersive sim, Prey inherits the great strengths of Deus Ex and System Shock. So you explore every corner of the space station and get umpteen solutions for every challenge.
- Redout: There was F-Zero, there was Wipeout… and then there wasn’t an ultra-hyper-mega-fast racer for a very long time. But Redout changes that and will im Epic Store
- Jotun: Are you interested in Norse mythology? Then Jotun is a must. Likewise im Epic Store.
- Out of Reach: Treasure Royal Sounds great on paper: A Battle Royale in a pirate setting. But in fact the servers are mostly empty and the reviews are rather mixed. If you’re curious, take a look in Steams Free Weekend pure. But don’t hope for too much.
More free games
Wow, what would a weekend free games post be without a proper promotion of our own free offering? In the month of May we are giving away the survival strategy game Dead in Vinland to all GameStar Plus members. And as the name suggests, it also goes into Nordic realms here:

In addition, it is of course always worth taking a look GOG’s always free games shelf. There you’ll find classics like Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, and a few old Ultima milestones. Is there something for you this time? Feel free to put your opinion in the comments. We wish you a nice weekend!
