The camera is a little shaky. The date in the bottom right corner of the screen shows July 18, 1988. Apparently a private video. First, a boy is seen. In the next shot, this same boy is being carried out of a pool by a man.
These are the first scenes from a trailer that was recently uploaded to both Netflix and the official World of Warcraft profile on X, formerly Twitter. It is the trailer for the documentary The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, which will be available on Netflix at the end of October.
Second life in WoW
The film is about the Norwegian Mats Steen. He suffered from a degenerative muscle disease, Duchenne muscular dystropy (DMD), which leads to progressive muscle wasting.
In 2014, Steen died at just 25 years old. His parents believed that their son had led a lonely life without contacts. But they were wrong.
Mats had played World of Warcraft with enthusiasm, where he was known as Ibelin Redmoore. There he built a second life for himself, as his illness played no role in the virtual world of Azeroth. In WoW he made many contacts, and lived and loved online.
After Steen’s death, his former teammates contacted his parents. They told them what influence Mats alias Ibelin had had on them.
In the film, Norwegian director Benjamin Ree reconstructs Steen’s life based on stories from his parents, former teammates and archive materials, such as the private video described above. In addition, an actor speaks the real entries from Mats Steen’s blog.
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin will be available on Netflix from October 25th. You can see the trailer here:
