AtlasOS wants to be the better Windows 10 for gamers. We’ll tell you what changes the modification makes to the operating system and what needs to be considered.
- AtlasOS is an open source modification of Windows 10 based on update 21H1.
- The modified version of the Microsoft operating system increases performance by removing some processes and programs.
- The software can be used legally, a product key for Windows 10 is still required.
The Microsoft operating system Windows has always been the standard for gaming applications, since the competitors Linux and macOS were never able to assert themselves in this area. But the desire for even more FPS and even better graphics doesn’t stop gamers from questioning the establishment and developing their own solutions. An example: AtlasOS.
The operating system, which is a modified version of Windows 10 21H1, includes hundreds of small changes that, according to the creators, should significantly improve the overall performance of the system, especially when gaming.

AtlasOS: Slim version of Windows 10 Pro
In general, AtlasOS is a slimmer version of Windows 10 Pro. Several parts of the operating system that are active in the background and consume resources but are not absolutely necessary for execution have been removed. This includes the following parts of Windows 10:
- All (advertising) trackers and telemetry to protect user privacy and minimize data collection.
- Unnecessary, pre-installed apps and programs: According to the makers, the system was “debloated”, i.e. freed from unnecessary and resource-hungry programs – Windows Defender is also one of them. This significantly reduced the installation size and the file size of the ISO.
- Other parts of the operating system that have been determined to be unnecessary.
In addition, the performance of the operating system is said to have been significantly increased by applying a user-defined power consumption scheme and disabling energy-saving modes. There is also an improved system for managing running background services, thanks to which the available power can be used more efficiently, according to the developers.
Is AtlasOS safe and legal?
The use of the modification is completely free. On the positive side, the entire source code of the changes made is publicly available on GitHub. It can thus be checked that no malicious programs have been installed. Open source programs are also often the safest because a community of experienced users can check for security gaps.
It should be noted that the provided ISO files are not yet activated. This means you still need a legally purchased Windows 10 Pro license key to use the system.
However, if you already own a computer with Windows 10 Pro, you usually do not need to buy a new license key, since the existing key is already stored in your account. More information can be found in the official Github Repository von Atlas OS
Kritik an AtlasOS
On the internet, AtlasOS is mainly criticized for failing to take security into account when optimizing the system. For example, the system is vulnerable to Meltdown and Specter attacks. Because the modification comes without Windows Defender, you are also completely without virus protection when using it. You should therefore be particularly careful not to install any harmful programs on the PC.
Alternatively, you can install a third-party anti-virus program. In general, however, it is only advisable to use it on older computers without Internet access.
Is AtlasOS also available for Windows 11?
The modification is not yet available for Windows 11.
