With its FRITZ!Box routers, the manufacturer AVM has found its way into millions of German households. So that the devices can always meet new security challenges and be supplemented with new functions, the company regularly supplies the routers with updates for the FRITZ!OS operating system. Below we will explain to you what the updates contain, what new features the current update brings and how long your router will be provided with the corresponding updates.

What do the updates for FRITZ!OS contain and why should I install them?

FRITZ!OS is the operating system that runs on AVM routers. On the one hand, it contains all the important programs for operating the router itself and, on the other hand, the user interface, which can be accessed online and is necessary for setting up and managing the router. AVM provides FRITZ!OS with major updates at least once a year and with smaller updates in between. These updates include security improvements and new features.

Since new security holes and exploits are constantly being found in network systems and software, it is necessary for developers to regularly offer their customers improvements that fix the gaps. In addition, new features are constantly being added to make using the router and the network easier and more convenient. To ensure that you always have the latest features and remain protected against security gaps, we recommend that you always install FRITZ!OS updates as soon as possible after they are released.

What's new in FRITZ!OS 8?

AVM recently announced the new update to FRITZ!OS 8. This includes some improvements to various features of the router. These important innovations are available in FRITZ!OS 8:

  • Smart Home: Anyone who uses their FRITZ!Box router in combination with door and window contacts or other smart home devices from AVM can look forward to a few new features. With FRITZ!OS 8 it will be possible to set up individual schedules with scenarios and routines for radiator control. In addition, colors and brightness values for colors as well as the position of roller shutters can be adjusted directly in the user menu – if the devices are compatible.
  • User interface: A lot has also changed in the FRITZ!OS user interface. A new online monitor now shows the load and Internet usage by the individual connected devices in real time, and there is now also a new display for the use of the WLAN throughout the day. In addition, devices in mesh networks can now be given a unique name or symbol.
  • Furnishings: All devices with FRITZ!OS 8 can also be set up with the FRITZ! smartphone app after the update. This is much easier than setting it up via the browser interface or the PC app, which was previously only possible.
  • WireGuard: Anyone who uses a VPN connection via WireGuard in their FRITZ!Box network can look forward to greater security and even easier setup of connections to the home network. Because with FRITZ!OS 8, WireGuard connections are also possible via IPv6.

A complete list of what's new in FRITZ!OS 8 can be found in the release notes from AVM. AVM has now also released two bug fix updates with Fritz!OS 8.01 and 8.02.
