Baldur’s Gate 3 already has some serious content, but the studio hasn’t revealed everything yet and could well have some nice surprises in store for the future. Here’s what we know so far.
When Baldur’s Gate 3 left Early Access and released in August, Larian Studios celebrated by adding two new species: Dragonborn and Half-Orcs. But Dungeons and Dragons offers so many options that it was inevitable that some species would be left out. Luckily Larian doesn’t close the door all the way…
Baldur’s Gate 3 and the new species
Adam Smith, writing director at Larian Studios, said during a Twitch stream: “We haven’t stopped updating the game. We will continue to do so […] We don’t have any concrete plans for new breeds at the moment, but we won’t say no.“
Smith also mentioned that many ideas were not considered because they did not fit the campaign or story the studio wanted to tell. However, some could be considered later. We can therefore imagine, without getting too wet, that new races will take place in the future.
Faerûn, the world on which the Sword Coast is located, is full of species that Larian could potentially exploit in the future. Among them goblins and aasimars. Other species such as the Aarakocra, winged bird people, or the Yuan-ti, crawling snakes, could also be considered. The Dungeons and Dragons universe is almost endless and evolves over time.
A History of Popularity
According to Larian, the most popular species are half-elves, humans, and elves, with the Githyanki being the least popular race. The choice of style opens the door to unique dialogue opportunities. For those who don’t want to wait for Larian to add more species, modders have already expanded the character creation menu. A mod called Fantastical Multiverse adds 54 species from 5th Edition D&D and One D&D to the game. And there will be more to this Baldur’s Gate 3 mod in the future.
This free mod offers a variety of races such as Goblins, Kobolds or Goliaths, as well as species from Final Fantasy 14. MMORPG enthusiasts (like the creator of the mod) have the opportunity to create characters such as a Hyur, an Élézen, a Roegadyn or a Garlemaldais. In another genre, there is the Fellowship of the Ring mod, which adds Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Aragorn and Gandalf. And with it the opportunity to play an evil chubby hobbit.
