Gestapo, KGB and now a cultural center, there are these places that tell so much at once. The building on Vytauto Street is just such a place. Today Kaunas Cultural Center, it was the headquarters of the KGB in Soviet times. And during the Second World War, the Gestapo hatched their perfidious plans here. The building shows: Lithuania has an eventful past, but also a lively present. In Kaunas, this is evident on many corners. The country’s second largest city with 300,000 inhabitants is the European Capital of Culture 2022. Reason for the “Ostseereport” team to travel there.
The world-renowned performance artist Marina Abramovic opens her “Memory of Being” exhibition.
Also accompanied is Vilma, who was born in Lithuania and grew up here during Soviet times. How was it in those days? How does she live in her hometown today? Does she worry that Putin’s war will bring the past back into the present? In other regions of Lithuania, too, residents talk a lot about current political developments. In the old post office building, an architectural landmark of modernism in the city, offices have now been spontaneously turned into accommodation and work opportunities for Ukrainian artists. The state’s past is varied, ranging from Europe’s largest kingdom in the 13th century to its dissolution in the Soviet Republic, a history of recurring independence to German, Swedish, Polish and Russian occupation. All of this has had an influence: on architecture, religion, language and art.
These influences are reaching out to Manhattan. This is where the most dazzling personality of the Lithuanian-born Fluxus art movement lives: Yoko Ono. She also has an exhibition in Kaunas this year. Their wooden coffins, from which trees grow, could hardly be more up-to-date in these times. Now that Kaunas is presenting art and culture in times of war.
Other topics:
The Suwalki Gap: a Polish city in a vulnerable region, between Poland and Lithuania, close to Kaliningrad.
Bodø in Norway: Portrait of Vegard Bøthun. The former Royal Norwegian Air Force pilot now operates a seaplane.
