If Anthony Bourdain has taught me anything, it’s that you can see the heart of a country through food. Whether it’s the lonely meals that people stop for in convenient kitchens as they travel from place to place, the grand feasts we throw when we celebrate, or the food we give as gifts to each other to please, nourish, and entertain, food It is the beating heart of culture. The real world, the virtual world.
There are many game worlds that manage to reflect the soul that goes into food. final fantasy 15 and its sumptuous meals — all prepared by Ignis, a human Labrador — come to mind, where any chef worth his salt can cook at final fantasy 14. monster hunter For years, any intrepid explorer has known that before setting off on an expedition, they sit down with friends for a meal.Even sitting alone next to a warm pot of beans has a romantic allure Red Dead Redemption 2.
But The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom does it differently. Like its predecessor, breath of the wildSince then, Nintendo has poured unparalleled care and attention into Tears of the Kingdom’s Hylian delicacies. Whether you’re improvising a skewer to pick yourself up before your next Bokobrin skirmish, or pouring your heart (vessel) and soul into a rich stew that will get you up the next mountain The pinnacle, playing the role of chef in TotK, is more than just refreshing…it’s essential if you want to survive.
Whenever I go to a new place, I immediately start sniffing out local ingredients – a different kind of pepper? plucked. A new kind of meat from a local fauna? hunted. Some strange new nut growing from a craggy plant squeezed between two rocks? take. Often, these local ingredients influence what you need – you’ll find chilli peppers growing in the snow that provide you with cold resistance, and you’ll find heat-resistant lizards crawling on dried lava.
Put down some wood, crack some flint, pop one of your Zonai jars out of its fancy sci-fi capsule, and viola; you’re cooking with fire. Combine ingredients in a snap, the exciting moment when Link realizes his culinary fantasies, and you have a meal. Is it a broth that blows the wind off the bone in minutes? A delicious chilled meat dish to last you longer in the heat of a lava cave? up to you. Just like cooking in real life, only with the fantastic ingredients you can only dream of.
Food in Tears of the Kingdom also has a peculiar logic–simply adding an egg to some sliced meat and chili won’t get you an omelet. To really get a taste of Hylian cuisine, you have to try it – throw pepper and some garlic in with some fish, crush some rock salt over a fluffy egg and milk mixture, put five whole chicken wings in a pot at a time… …just to wait and see.
The results could be game-changing. Last night, I was climbing Death Mountain. I’m pretty early in the game, finding my feet and wings in this new vertical world. If I could get rid of the crockpot (or should it be the Korok pot?), maybe I’d make more progress. I only have one stamina ring, and a few precious hearts. However, despite this, after opening a sky tower, I still relied on the breeze to blow to the foot of the death mountain, and I could not easily refuse such a huge challenge. So I start climbing.
Taking a break from some hot tubs and scouring the fringes of the spa for some local flavors, I kept climbing most of the hill. However, as I got closer to the top, everything started to get pretty… steep. The volcano’s multiple cliffs pose a pure challenge (pun intended) that will exercise even the most experienced climbers’ arm muscles. But what I lack in training season, I make up for in training with seasoning. After a quick campfire and some herb cooking, my bag was stuffed with enough food for me to climb one last imposing mantle to the apex.
You see, I’ve found that adding some delicious spices to meat dishes can be rejuvenating – and you can fill your face with it on a mountain climb! So when you have enough rosemary chicken in your back pocket, even gigantic standoffs and wide granite slabs seem insignificant. wonderful.
That’s the beauty of Kingdom Tears, like Breath of the Wild before it: you can overcome almost any challenge in almost any way you like. Food has focus (and love and respect), but it’s only one ingredient in the hearty stew of this open-world masterpiece.
I chose to play a chef in Tears of the Kingdom because it reminds me of a life I almost lived, but you can equally play Link as an engineer, fighter, pilot, shirtless boxer, wandering pacifist , an expert rally driver, or…well, pretty much anything. This is RPG catnip, and it’s easy to see why so many consider it one of the best games of all time.
