Silent Hill 2 will soon have the rights to a remake, but also to a movie, Return to Silent Hill. However, new information tells us that the feature film should be very different from the game it is inspired by.
Konami has been working hard to bring back its cult survival horror franchise. After years of crossing the desert and a failed game with Hideo Kojima, the Japanese company is now multiplying projects and even intends to chain them for years. Several games have been announced, including Silent Hill 2 Remake, due out later this year. But also a new film, also inspired by Silent Hill 2. The movie, Return to Silent Hillwill also be directed by Christophe Gans, the director to whom we owe the very first film silent Hill from 2006. Despite the great liberties, an honest and fairly faithful adaptation of the source material.
And when it comes to his next film, Gans should take it easy as new information does suggest it does Return to Silent Hill will be very different from the game it is based on.
A film less inspired by Silent Hill 2 than expected?
In fact, via the German site FilmPortal, we learn that the film will opt for a slightly different plot than the original game (and the remake) and that it should also add a brand new character. still play an important role in the plot.
At least, the synopsis recently published on the internet suggests so. It was said that Return to Silent Hill will tell us about the nightmarish journey of James Sunderland in search of his lost love, Mary Crane. But the town of Silent Hill has changed a lot, the residents and old acquaintances of Sunderland have gotten weird and everyone is telling him to go back. The journey then takes a strange turn, to the point where James Sunderland will wonder if he’s not once again falling into the clutches of one Jacob Crane, the famous new character we know absolutely nothing about.
Driven by the shadows of his past, James Sunderland returns to Silent Hill to reunite with his lost love, Mary Crane. But the dark and depressing town is no longer the place of his memories. There he encounters characters who seem too familiar and want to distract him from his search for Mary. The more he searches for Mary, the more he wonders if this is still reality – or if he has fallen into the dark underworld of Jacob Crane.

Expect big differences? (Warning, minor game spoilers)
However, if the synopsis is inaccurate, it suggests that some things will change from the start of the film. while in Silent Hill 2 James returns to Silent Hill in search of his late wife, Mary Shepherd-Sunderland, prompted by a letter from the latter, the film tells us something else entirely. James is actually said to be in search of a certain Mary Crane, “a love lost”. So it is not said that it is his wife and even less that it is “she” who eventually pushes him to come to Silent Hill. Also, the synopsis tells us about a certain Jacob Crane who seems to be linked by name to the mysterious woman James was looking for. This character, obviously capable of altering reality, does not exist in the original game. Finally, it is apparently assumed that James Sunderland would be aware of the different realities and that he would also know this famous Jacob.
Obviously everything is still very vague, but the differences are already there. In Silent Hill 2After reading an emotionally charged letter, James Sunderland searches for his wife, who was previously thought dead. The result is a terrifying and metaphorical journey in which grief, pain, terror and the search for redemption are intertwined. This is where the film seems to introduce a new antagonist who will obviously be there to thwart James and send him insane. It remains to be seen how all this will develop.
As a reminder, the first film adaptation of silent Hill She also took her liberties and incorporated new characters, twisting the mythology created by Konami to create something that’s ultimately faithful to the game but relatively unique. It’s quite possible that Christophe Gans is going the same way here. But we’ll have to wait for more information to have the heart web, for now we can only theorize. During the official announcement of Return to Silent HillHowever, Gans had said he wanted to make a very different film than when he first tried it. In particular, to reach the widest possible audience, from fans of the Konami license, to the curious, to lovers of horror and horror movies.
An actor already confirmed in the casting?
Return to Silent Hill doesn’t have a release date yet, but should be in production right now. While the full cast is not yet known, recent information leaks claim that Jérémy Irvine is set to play the role of James Sunderland. The actor has been seen mostly in recent years Mamma Mia! here we go again (2018). He was also the headliner of the series stepping stone on Amazon Prime Video.
