Silent Hill 2 is definitely an iconic game and while the remake is awaited, many fans are still concerned. But Bloober wants to assure us, the game will be the same except for a few details.
After years of absence, Konami has decided to pull out all the stops for the big comeback of silent Hill. No fewer than four games have already been announced and revealed, a secret project is in development and a movie will also soon be arriving in our dark rooms. Among the big upcoming games we find Silent Hill 2 Remake, developed by Bloober Team (The Medium, Layers of Fear). The game should also be coming to consoles and PC later this year, although it’s still quite understated.
A creepy remake
A title eagerly awaited by the fans, which has clearly fueled the hype, but also the concern. Silent Hill 2 is a decidedly cult game, even legendary for some, and many do not think this remake is a good idea. Back then, the game impressed with its atmosphere and its share of installation scares, but it’s also good to note that the game was also scary due to several technical limitations, like the first opus.
The camera angles, the fog and the reduced viewing distance, so many sleight of hand that managed to instill an almost constant fear, in addition to helping the developers not trip over the rug.
But in the age of PS5s and super powerful PCs, the technology has come a long way since then, as have trends and standards that Bloober has decided to conform to. This is where some fans thought things were definitely going to get out of hand, and fears of a failed remake run high. However, Bloober has resources and in an interview for DreadXPthe studio returned to the big changes brought about by the remake while trying to reassure fans.
Silent Hill 2 Remake will be the same as before, only better
The first major change, and not least, is undoubtedly the transition to the shoulder camera. There are no fixed camera angles anymore Silent Hill 2 remake opts for controls similar to those in Resident Evil 2 Remake or The Evil Within 2. The entire combat system has also been redesigned with this new perspective. But when some mechanics have been modernized, the Bloober Team makes sure that the game keeps everything that was made Silent Hill 2 Original, a cult game.
We focus on bringing back the distinctive and visceral atmosphere Silent Hill 2 make new. Longtime fans needn’t worry, we won’t be left behind. We’re staying true to the original game’s story while reworking the gameplay and overhauling the visuals from the start. Those are the reasons Konami gave us the remake in the first place. One of the big visible changes is the switch to an over-the-shoulder camera, which changed the perspective of some iconic scenes but also led to an overhaul of the combat system. The latest advances in technology work wonders when it comes to making images pop. We’re not deviating from the original concept of this cult classic, we just have some ideas on how to make the fear and horror factors more appealing to modern audiences.
Silent Hill 2 remake should therefore remain completely faithful to the original game and never deviate from it. The Bloober team was therefore content to improve the formula with modern techniques, but as he points out, certain sequences then carried by fixed camera angles should still offer new approaches.
We handle all changes very safely. We stay true to the original title. Nevertheless, we are making adjustments in some areas where there is a need for modernization due to advancing technologies and trends.
And you, does this remake make you fear the worst?
