Update July 22nd 9:50 pm: The problems have now been resolved. The cause was apparently a faulty server update. The service provider Akamai rules out a cyber attack.

What’s wrong with the internet? You are sure to ask yourselves today, July 22nd. Because since around 5 p.m., numerous prominent pages have not been accessible. In Germany, among others, Bild.de, Focus Online and Zalando are affected, internationally Airbnb and UPS and others.
The reason for the problem is apparently a DNS error. DNS servers translate the Internet address you entered into an IP address that is required to call up the associated website. If the assignment fails or an error occurs, problems arise, as is now the case.
Often these can be replaced by a Change of DNS server or using a VPNs work around until the provider has responded and corrected the error. So far, however, we have had no luck with either solution.
Apparently problems with a service provider
It is now also clear who is responsible for the mistake. Akamai Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of online application and content delivery and acceleration, announced on Twitter that it is experiencing problems with its DNS service.
