Shortly before the end of the year there will be replenishment for all fans of the loot-shooter Borderlands 3. With Moxxi's Heist of The Handsome Jackpot, the first of a total of four larger story DLCs is now available. We took a closer look at the wacky chapter. After all, the question always arises with a download extension: Is it worth buying at all?
The Gearbox team wants to release a total of four larger story DLCs for the loot-shooter Borderlands 3, in order to keep the players on the long-term. The first additional chapter of this kind bears the confusingly long name Moxxi's Heist of The Handsome Jackpot, which we will only call Moxxi DLC for the sake of simplicity. But what is this download extension all about?

So let's first take a look at the story, which is not entirely unimportant. As the name suggests, everything revolves around a visit or an attack on the casino "The Handsome Jackpot". The bartender Mad Moxxi, known from previous episodes, gives you the order to take over the casino. With this campaign, she wants to wipe her former lover – i.e. Handsome Jack – properly. So she sends you to the casino space station, where some surprises await you. You will receive support from Moxxi's crew, so that everything is prepared for another crazy adventure.
Vicious space excursion
The Handsome Jack space station converted into a huge casino is officially considered abandoned. However, it quickly turns out that this assumption could not be further from the truth. In the past few years, numerous visitors to the Temple of Gambling were trapped there and in the meantime … well … something has changed. This ranges from lightly mutated thugs to decayed looters to Hyperion robots. Sometimes these guys endure a lot, so that not only additional variety but also challenge is provided.
You will not only meet hostile fellows, but also more or less helpful allies. There is, for example, the eccentric Ember, who has a certain penchant for pyromania, or the fashion-conscious on-board mechanic Freddie, who seems to have sprung from the 80s. They are all wonderfully crazy and follow the style of the main game.

The same also applies to the casino itself, which is divided into several segments and thus gives you a lot of space to explore. There is no shortage of variety in the locations: You can of course visit the numerous amusement arcades, which are packed with bright lights, bright decorations and of course lots of machines. The latter are actually interactive, by the way, so that you can spend a relaxed round on a slot machine between all the battles. However, you have to forego the big win. In addition, the DLC leads you to sweeping plazas, winding corridors and even a huge hangar – after all, you are on a space station.
Pure gambling or more?
However, all of these locations are not only replete with opponents and pretty decorations, they also have some new side missions and crew challenges to keep you entertained apart from the main task. This works fairly well for most of the time, but overall, the missions are neither particularly deep nor memorable. They are simply the means for the purpose of pure employment. The story of the Moxxi DLC has also been turned off nicely, but a little more substance would not have been bad for her.
Oh yes, we almost forgot: Of course, the Moxxi DLC has more to offer that what Borderlands 3 serves in abundance anyway – lots of loot. On the wild forays through the casino you will find numerous new weapons and equipment. The developers have even thought of additional options for the optical adaptation of your exterminator as well as one or the other emote. The playing time of three to four hours is satisfactory for a DLC.
