in a recent blog post Bungeit turns out, a “significant” number Destiny 2 PS5 players aren’t actually playing the correct version of the game.
Back in 2020, Dest iny 2 players were seen as a next-gen port of the game, which didn’t add anything new, but did bump the game up to higher resolutions, 60 frames per second, and faster load times . It’s something PS5 and Xbox Series X players can upgrade to, if they’re lucky enough to own a console at the time. Except in Bungie’s latest blog post of the week, the developers are “reminding” PS5 players of the fact that a non-zero number of players are playing the PS4 version of the game (thanks, Kotaku).
See, the problem with PS5 backwards compatibility is that Sony did it in a way that wasn’t very clear. Let’s say you purchased a game through PlayStation Network that runs on both PS4 and PS5. You can actually download the PS4 version of the game to your PS5 if you want, and it seems a lot of Destiny 2 players are doing this by mistake.
“Attention, PlayStation Guardians,” Bungie wrote in a blog post. “We’ve noticed a significant number of PS5 players playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 on their current-generation consoles.” To help PS5 players, Bungie even linked to the resources that PlayStation had to make it easier to upgrade the game, which honestly should be automatic.
This issue doesn’t appear on Xbox because if you’re on Series X, you just download the Series X version of the game, but Sony never made things easier with backwards compatibility.
Bungie doesn’t notice how many players are actually “notable”, but apparently it’s big enough to be worth a little info. If you fall into that group, you might be able to upgrade it to improve your Destiny 2 experience.
Destiny 2 fans also have a lot to look forward to, as shown in the big reveal in August.
