Microsoft will digitize all its external and internal events from now until July 2021, which may include Gamescom 2020 and E3 2021.
Microsoft has confirmed that in view of the E3 cancellation in 2020, it will host a digital event, but from now until July 2021, all planned events seem to be digital.
This is the current plan, but the company said it will "continue to evaluate the situation" and looks forward to "contacting it in person when circumstances permit".
The news was confirmed by the announcement about the next MVP summit, which is currently scheduled to be held from March 28 to April 2nd, 2021 (thanks to ZDNet).

This also means that although Gamescom 2020 is still scheduled for release in August, Microsoft can still choose a pure digital experience for its Xbox announcement. If it plans to maintain a pure digital format until July 2021, it means that it can also be skipped at E3 next year, which is scheduled to take place on June 15-17, 2021.
Currently, Microsoft has not announced its plan to replace E3 2020 in June.
