The internet and Reddit are not only full of interesting, credible stories, but also countless completely made-up stories. We have an article here for you that initially makes us a little skeptical, but which nevertheless seems plausible to us based on our own experiences:

Reddit user MrAwesomeTG wants to build a new gaming computer for his son as a Christmas present. He comes across an offer for a used PC that seems too good to be true.
Nevertheless, the father allegedly took the plunge and bought the device for $1,000 (around 912 dollars).
What’s in the calculator – including new prices?
- Mainboard: ASRock Z790 Nova WiFi (310 Euro)
- Processor: Intel Core i7 14700K (417 Euro)
- Graphic card: Asus ROG Strix Gaming Geforce RTX 4070 Ti 12GB (899 Euro)
- Random access memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 32 GB DDR5-6400 (120 Euro)
- Cooling: Cooler Master MasterLiquid 360 Atmos (156 Euro)
- Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB (160 Euro)
- Power adapter: Corsair RMe 1000e (153 Euro)
- Housing: NZXT H6 Flow (118 Euro)
- Case fan: 8x Cooler Master Halo (196 Euro)
The seller is also said to have given him a Steelseries Arctis 3 headset (80 dollars), a Steelseries Apex 7 TKL gaming keyboard (139 dollars) and an IETS GT500 laptop cooler (90 dollars). It is not clear from the Reddit post whether the devices were included in the 912 dollars.
The computer without peripherals would cost 2,529 dollars new. The graphics card alone costs as much as MrAwesomeTG claims to have paid in total on the Facebook Marketplace.
Why was the computer sold in the first place?
According to the Reddit thread, the seller simply no longer has time for gaming; family life, including new offspring, is more important.
The computer does not appear to have any damage. It has already passed several 3DMark tests.
How realistic is the offer?
In our opinion, it is quite possible that the user has made the bargain of a lifetime here, but we are still a little skeptical.
The computer would not even be a year old – the Intel Core i7 14700K only came onto the market in the fourth quarter of 2023. Asking for less than half the purchase price after barely a year seems questionable.
What also makes us sit up and take notice is that the Reddit user claims to have bought the gaming computer as a Christmas present. After the public post, it’s probably no longer a surprise.
It could of course be that this is an early Christmas present or that the son was in on it from the start.
And given the seller’s family circumstances (a newborn), it is conceivable that the sale should be completed quickly (and therefore inexpensively).
A similar story happened in the environment of the author of this article:
A few years ago, a good friend of mine sold a high-end computer that was almost as good as new for a ridiculously low price (far less than half the new price) because the existing computer room was to be converted into a children’s room and there was simply no room for a desktop computer.
The comments under the thread are entirely positive and not very critical. Most of them congratulate MrAwesomeTG on his bargain.
But what do you think? Do you think the Reddit user’s story could really have happened like that? Let us know in the comments!
