Capcom launches a 10th anniversary website Dragon’s DogmaThe RPG was released in 2012.
It doesn’t seem like it was a long time ago, does it? We feel really old now.
Announced in 2011 and originally released for PS3 and Xbox One, the game, led by Hideaki Itsuno and Hiroyuki Kobayashi, was Capcom’s foray into the brutally competitive world of big-budget action-RPGs, and it was a hit with players. The game shipped more than 1 million copies in its first month of release, with a lifetime of more than 1.3 million copies.
An enhanced version with additional content was released for the game’s original console in 2013, called Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, before being ported to PC in 2016. It was then released to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017, and to Nintendo Switch in 2019. Over 4 million units have been sold as of press time.
The open-world game places players in a fantasy setting where a giant dragon descends on a village and steals the hearts of the chosen ones. After his heart was pulled out by the dragon, our hero must find the dragon to take it back. You and your three AI buddies are tasked with saving villagers, slaying large mythical beasts like Hydras and Griffons, and finding out why the hero is the dragon’s lad of choice.
A sequel was reportedly in development as early as 2012, when Hideaki said that only 60-70% of his ideas for the original made it into the final game. One of the ideas was to create quests, possibly a larger game world, since the original only contained two-thirds of what Hideaki originally wanted.
However, Hideaki didn’t go ahead with a sequel, but continued to lead Devil May Cry 5, which was released in early 2019. Then he started working on his next project. Could it be Dragon’s Creed 2? Only Capcom and Hideaki know about it at the moment, but it would be nice if there was a sequel. Really good. Maybe the anniversary website is a stepping stone to the announcement. Let’s hope.
Until then, we’ll just have to work it out by playing the game again, or watching the Dragon’s Dogma anime series on Netflix.
