Apex leads the way, Warzone does the same
The Battle Royale Apex Legends was able to generate a similar hype for the surprise release in February 2019. After just 72 hours, publisher EA said that Apex had broken the 10 million mark.
It is quite possible that Activision is different from this successful role model copied one or the other. In turn, Fortnite's success should not have passed EA. The parallels between Apex Legends, Fortnite and CoD: Warzone are obvious:
- All three games rely on the battle royale hype after Playerunknown's Battlegrounds opened the door in 2017 and celebrated colossal successes.
- They are all Free2Play. So everyone can play it for free, which maximizes the target audience.
- And all three games offer cosmetic items for real money and a Battle Pass to monetize the content.
Activision also launched Call of Duty: Warzone, as Apex Legends did the element of surprise. Both games appeared shortly after their first official announcement, let the leaks be left out in advance. This strategy is now paying off for CoD: Warzone.
