If you want to create a special ambience when looking at the film or series, you rely on backlights synchronized. The Philips Hue products are particularly popular for this – however, they are not exactly cheap. Now there is a significantly cheaper alternative with the HDMI Sync Box of the Signify brand Wiz-of course with suitable LED strips and lamps. We were able to look at the new product and get a first impression.

The new box taps the HDMI signal of the television and coordinates the colors of the backlight to the colors of the TV image-without a camera or other calibration. You just have to switch the small box between the source – such as a Firetv stick and TV. Then assemble the supplied light trip on the back of the television. Resolutions up to 4K at 60 Hertz as well as HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are supported.

Our first impression

Above all, we liked the interaction with other lights such as the new Gradient Light Bars and the Gradient Floor Light: In combination, a harmonious overall picture is created with which the entire room can be diving into an atmospheric ambient light.

We find it particularly practical that there are no fixed number of lamps that can be connected to the HDMI Sync Box-a clear advantage over the Philips Hue Sync Box, which is limited to up to ten devices.

The control

You can use the WIZ app to adjust the light profile or select various synchronization modes such as “Cinematic” or “Vibrant”. The control also works through voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant.

Price and availability

In terms of price, WIZ remains significantly below the premium offers of Philips Hue: The HDMI-Sync box including TV strip for televisions up to 65 inches should cost 89.99 dollars. 109.99 dollars are scheduled for larger TVs (up to 85 inches). The additional gradient light bars start at 59.99 dollars and the Gradient Floor Light is 89.99 dollars. All products support the matter standard and can therefore be used across platforms. They are available from May.
