A film could hardly be more current – but exactly at the moment the real church leader says goodbye, the film is not available on a streaming service with subscription. Instead, it means: buy or wait.

“Conclave” starts where the Catholic Church is in one of its most important and most secret rituals: the choice of a new Pope, the so -called conclave. The action begins with the death of the reigning top of the church and tells how cardinals gather in the Vatican to determine the next Pope – everyone with their own interests, abysses and political agendas. It is precisely this moment that has now occurred in reality, because Pope Francis died at the age of 88 and the Catholic world is in a state of emergency.
However, if you have become curious, you face a problem: Although “Conclave” was recently available on Peacock, the film is currently not to be found on a subscription streaming service. The reason is a deal between Universal and Amazon Prime Video, which provides for films to run on Peacock for four months after the cinema, then for ten months on Amazon Prime Video and then hike back to Peacock. It is precisely this transition that now covers the Pope's death.
At the moment, the film can only be borrowed or bought from Amazon Prime Video, for prices between 5 and 15 dollars. If you are patient, you can look forward to: “Conclave” will soon be available free of charge in the USA for Prime members. However, an official confirmation of whether this also applies to Germany is still pending.

With its dense atmosphere, opulent images and an intensive ensemble chamber game, “Conclave” not only provides tension, but also critical insights into the dynamics of power behind church walls. The film addresses the Sede Vacante, the time without Pope, and shows how deep faith, ambition and guilt are interwoven in the highest ranks of the church.
If the current streaming confusion around “Conclave” is too much, you can use other titles that are also worth seeing in the meantime:

The real world provides the perfect moment to deal with the fascination and complexity of the Papstam and “Conclave” is made for it. But the chaotic license system of streaming services shows once again: Nothing is as holy in the modern media world as a good deal. If you want to see the film, you have to borrow or wait, but that should be worth it.
