Sorry, Crash Bandicoot fans, it looks like a fifth game was in the works, but was cancelled at some point.

Everyone’s favourite bandicoot has had a bit of an odd time in recent years. It was given a bit of a resurgence in 2017 when Crash Bandicoot Trilogy brought the classic PS1 character back to the forefront and proved a hit with a new, younger audience. This later led to a remake of Crash Racing in 2019, and of course a year later, Toys for Bob released a sequel to the original trilogy, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. Since then, though, things have quieted down a bit. Last year did see Crash Bandicoot 5, an ultimately less-than-successful live service game whose last content update was released in March of this year. But there has always been the question of whether there will be a Crash Bandicoot 5. The answer, it seems, was that there used to be one in development – but no longer.

That’s according to Nicholas Kole, a character artist who worked on games like Spyro the Dragon: Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. Sadly, the game Kole had been working on recently, codenamed Project Dragon, was canceled, which of course made some fans wonder if it had anything to do with the purple dragon Spyro. Kole clarified that Project Dragon was not a new Spyro (artwork later shared showed a fantasy game inspired by Minecraft that did look adorable). However, Kole noted in a tweet that it was not a Spyro game, and “one day people will hear about the Crash Bandicoot 5 that never happened and it will be heartbreaking.”

There has never been any official announcement regarding Crash 5, and Kole is no longer working at Toys for Bob, so it’s probably best to err on the side of caution. The Crash 4 developer did go it alone earlier this year, and is now entering the game-making world as an independent studio – although it has already signed a deal with Microsoft for its next game (which many fans are hoping will be a new Spyro game, unsurprisingly). For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if anyone has more to share about Schrodinger’s Crash 5 in the future.
