Pearl Abyss showcases the power of the BlackSpace Engine—the technology behind Crimson Desert—at Game Developers Conference 2025.highlighting its advanced graphical capabilities.
BlackSpace Engine: The Power Behind Crimson Desert
With a release planned for late this year on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PCthis Black Desert Online spin-off aims to surpass its predecessor in every way, especially in terms of visuals.
As its launch approaches, Crimson Desert has revealed new details (such as rejecting a Sony exclusivity deal), and now its developers explain how they’ve achieved such a graphical feat with their engine.
At the Game Developers Conference 2025, Pearl Abyss held a behind-closed-doors demonstration of its proprietary game engine, showcasing the scale and ambition of the upcoming title.
The BlackSpace Engine enables seamless exploration of vast open worlds without loading screens, ensuring a smooth and immersive experience in Crimson Desert.
From lush forests and snow-capped mountains to medieval cities and sprawling deserts, every environment in the game is rendered in real-time with breathtaking detail.
The engine’s advanced physics system is also a highlight. Vegetation rivals that of Assassin’s Creed Shadowswhile clothing and hair move naturally with character motion.
Many environments will be destructible, and features like volumetric fog and real-time physical interactions enhance the world’s realism.
Combat Physics and Environmental Interactions
In an action-packed game, every hit needs to feel impactful. Thanks to the BlackSpace Engine’s physics, enemies react realistically to attacks and dynamically collide with their surroundings.
Another innovation is object destruction, which varies based on applied force—stronger blows produce more fragments. Additionally, enemies can dynamically crash into the environment.
BlackSpace Engine also processes lighting in real time, achieving realistic effects even without ray tracing. Dynamic weather, including rain, snow, and fog, further enhances immersion.
Lastly, the engine features advanced fluid simulations (such as FFT 8 ocean waves and shallow water physics), delivering unprecedented realism in bodies of water—waves, currents, and ripples react naturally to the environment.
