Why does crunch occur again and again? – German developers about the stress in the final phase
Crunch in the video game industry is a common topic in modern times. Many developers explain how they are doing have to work long hours just before a game is released. This causes psychological problems such as depression and burnout, especially in the event of constant stress.
In the past, working conditions in the gaming sector were therefore increasingly talked about and many employees were critical of the condition. Hugo Martin, the creative director of Doom Eternal, has his very own view of the subject.
Crunch as an inner attitude
Martin commented on the often criticized crunch phases in the podcast The Hoe Rogan Experience. However, instead of criticizing her, he tells him that he willingly plunges into her. For him it is a way of life:
"It's not really crunch … that will sound a bit crazy now. It's a lifestyle. I live and breathe it. Nobody forces me to stay in the office. Even when I get home, I see my children, make mine Thing and then I start doing research. "
For him it's about to stay in the spirit of the times and understand what's hot in pop culture. As a result, he also counts the consumption of video games as part of his work.
