It should be clear to everyone that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be an enormously important launch for CD Projekt RED. But apparently the game director had complete freedom.
Coming September 26th is Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the highly anticipated expansion to CD Projekt RED’s action role-playing game. And all signs point to it being a hugely successful expansion – see our preview from the hands-on session in Warsaw.
After the messed-up launch of the main game and the necessary post-processing, an enormously important launch, it is important not to repeat the debacle of the time and to restore the tarnished reputation.
Like from one Interview between Bloomberg and CD Projekt RED appears, the management level also seems to be clear, because apparently game director Gabe Amatangelo had all the freedom to implement the expansion. Amatangelo has apparently been in charge of the project since update 1.5, an update that was very well received by fans and improved the game considerably. Amatangelo had Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz at the time, who had resigned from his role.
Amatangelo reveals that he was given “free rein” by running CD Projekt to take all the time he needed for Phantom Liberty, including providing any resources he requested. A clear sign that also explains why a final release date has only now been set, although Phantom Liberty was announced a long time ago.
A lot has also happened in terms of corporate structure. At Phantom Liberty, Amatangelo says it has taken several measures to prevent staff from burning out, including a system that notifies management when someone is working for long periods. He said if an employee asks to work a few extra hours, he will allow it, but only to a certain extent.
Internally, Amatangelo’s work seems to be well received, because as he revealed in the interview, he will also take on the role of game director for the previously announced sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. However, we will have to wait a long time for the game, because development has not yet started started and CD Projekt RED had already indicated that pre-production would probably not start again this year.
