The current legal dispute between Microsoft and the US regulatory authority FTC on the occasion of the planned takeover of Activision Blizzard brings all sorts of interesting information to light. In the course of this, it has now apparently been confirmed for the first time that the survival sequel DayZ 2 is actively being worked on.
It was already known that Bohemia Interactive has a well-known shooter sequel in the works with Arma 4, but that is apparently by no means the only project with a big name there. At least that’s what new documents that were revealed in the course of the legal dispute between Microsoft and the American FTC suggest.
The Redmond company is arguing with the regulatory authority in court because they do not want to approve the planned billion-dollar deal with Activision Blizzard. The FTC wants to block the purchase because of concerns about competition – and Microsoft is currently taking legal action against it.
The new documents are now also about the developer studio Bohemia Interactive – and according to the Microsoft document, this is not only working on Arma 4. Instead, the popular survival title DayZ should also get a sequel. DayZ 2 is specifically listed alongside Arma Reforger and Arma 4 as a work in progress at Bohemia.
Arma Reforger is a trial and error platformer, while Arma 4 is a true sequel to the tactical shooter series for PC and Xbox. DayZ 2, on the other hand, has never been officially mentioned before, but is obviously actively under development. However, Bohemia Interactive itself has not yet commented on the documents that have become public.
DayZ was in early access for a long time from the release in December 2013; the full version 1.0 was only released after five years and implementations for consoles followed. Since then, the survival long-running hit has been continuously updated with new content. It remains to be seen to what extent a sequel that is now more possible than ever would follow a similar timetable.
Incidentally, the documents reveal further interesting information about the current DayZ as part of the Game Pass. The survival title has been played by subscribers for almost 19 million hours in the last 6 months via Microsoft’s subscription model – without PC Game Pass, i.e. only on the Xbox.
