Dead Rising: Deluxe Remastered aims to be the definitive version of the 2006 classic, and this remaster is smart about what it adds and what it keeps. However, there are a few changes made to the game, including some removals – most notably the removal of the camera mechanic.
As he tells everyone, Frank West is a photojournalist – and filming the chaos of the zombie-infested Willamette Mall is as important to his story as rescuing survivors, taking down psychopaths, and uncovering the truth behind the outbreak. However, there’s one major tweak to the camera mechanics in the Deluxe Edition remaster – and it’s sure to ruffle some feathers.

In the original version of the game and its nearly identical 2016 re-release, photos taken by Frank could trigger one of several photo categories – violence, drama, deleted scenes, horror, and erotica.
Each photo will be classified into different categories based on its content, so a photo of a zombie’s head exploding will be tagged as violence, while a beautiful human moment between two survivors might be tagged as drama.
According to Famitsu (and verified by iGamesNews), the Porn category has been removed in the Deluxe Remake. In the original game, the Porn category was only used for photos containing sexual content, and was usually triggered by female zombies with torn clothes or survivors wearing provocative clothing or posing provocatively. While many of the photo opportunities, poses, and clothing remain the same or similar, taking photos that would trigger the Porn category in the original game will not trigger it in the Deluxe Remake.
Dead Rising is nearly 20 years old, and attitudes to this kind of content in games have undoubtedly changed dramatically in that time. To our knowledge, removing this content won’t have any substantial impact on the game or gameplay, and for the record, this version plays better than ever. But this change will be a major differentiating factor between versions, and will surely spark a lively and tiresome debate about what is an appropriate change in a remaster.
We’ve reached out to Capcom for comment on these changes and will update this article if we hear back.
Dead Rising: Deluxe Remastered will be released on September 19th and will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
