Destiny 2 broke its concurrent user record on Steam, surpassing 316,000 users on the day the Lightfall expansion was released. That’s five years after it was originally launched.
This number from SteamCharts is impressive indeed, with the average weekly player rise and fall soaring from a peak earlier in the week to over 200,000 players. As the climactic conclusion to the series’ overall battle between light and dark, people seem eager to see the end for themselves.
Clearly, the narrative is a good reason for the previous record to be broken. After all, a good portion of the Destiny 2 player base just checked out the expansion launch missions, played a few Strike and Crucible matches, and left without grinding through the seasonal content. The notion of the conclusion of a years-long story might be sweet as honey to the more casual crowd. It’s a bit reminiscent of a Halo 3-style situation.
But to be fair, the gameplay itself is more accessible and accessible than before. Armor mod slots are now less frustrating to deal with, as are seasonal artifacts. In fact, if you’re the type of player who only dives into Destiny once a year for the big update, you’ll probably find the post-movie content the most enticing in years.
Then there’s all sorts of cool new features, including a new strand subclass that lets you swing the tech-heavy Neomuna around. All in all, jumping in with the first big wave was a fantastic experience, even if it was sometimes difficult to actually get in and participate.
