First place in the series of failures, bad luck and mishaps this week undoubtedly goes to Sony for the leak of the complete Destiny 2 expansion The Final Shape days before the release.
OK, it can happen that a video or a screenshot or even a piece of information leaks out in advance. But an entire expansion of a multiplayer title is pretty bitter. And that’s exactly what Sony has just done with Destiny 2: The Final Shape, which Bungie probably isn’t too happy about.
As Bungie confirmedit appears that some players have been granted early access to The Final Shape through Sony’s streaming service. This content was pre-installed on Sony’s servers for streaming purposes, but was not sufficiently protected to prevent users from accessing it early.
Bungie’s IT Support Lead puts it quite clearly:
After logging into the service, players were given a Rank 1 account and access to the tutorial. Players therefore did not have immediate access to Final Shape’s campaign, as that requires at least Guardian Rank 2, but they still had access to the map and inventory pages. As such, most of the leak focused on what players could see and access immediately, including the following:
-
Echoes Season Pass and Rewards
-
All items on the Collections page, including weapons, armor, gear, cosmetics, mods, and exotic items
-
Eververse Store Front, including exotic ornaments and other cosmetics
So much of the leak’s content focused on the loot and gear that is immediately visible in the menus. This includes raid loot that was not hidden. Some players apparently made it to Rank 2 and the Tower and were able to sneak a peek into the first campaign mission before the glitch was noticed and the servers were taken offline.
A real load of crap, especially for Bungie. The developers are currently trying to limit any leaks, especially on Reddit, and some people at Sony are probably going to have to listen to a severe scolding, if not worse.
