Destiny 2: The Final Shape: New content and first look at the expansion

The release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape in June could be crucial for Bungie’s future and the studio is slowly turning the turbines into full steam to get old players back on board.

In June 2024, The Final Shape, the next expansion for Destiny 2, will be released and at the same time the story conclusion of the ongoing saga. Extremely important for Bungie, because the studio has been stumbling for months after the weak previous expansion and some bad decisions. Even from parent company Sony there was a clear shot across the bow and a failure of The Final Shape could have bitter consequences, including the loss of current independence.

No wonder Bungie is currently trying to bring players back with another content update. It’s called Into the Light and starts April 9th. Bungie has now presented further content in another dev stream. A new map pack for the PvP Crucible has now been announced for May 7th. This will include three new maps, Eventide Labs, Cirrus Plaza and Dissonance. The three maps are based on the areas of the newer expansions such as Gale’s Watch or Neomuna. There should even be a separate playlist for the three new maps.

In addition to the Horde mode announced for April 9th, Pantheon, another new game mode, is scheduled to start on April 30th. This is apparently a kind of game with raid bosses. There will also be a weekly challenge for this mode, offering “escalating” difficulty and rewards.

Bungie is also bringing two exotic missions back into the game: The Whisper and Zero Hour, one in April and the other in May. Both missions have a time limit depending on difficulty and have received a number of revisions. You can watch the complete devstream from yesterday on YouTube – lasts about an hour, so have drinks and popcorn ready.

When Into the Light launches on April 9th at 6:30 p.m., Bungie also wants to whet the appetite for The Final Shape. There will be a 30-minute showcase with new scenes and gameplay from the expansion, and the launch trailer will also be published afterwards. The stream will be broadcast on Twitch, as well as the Destiny 2 channel on YouTube and on TikTok.

Bungie hasn’t seen this much activity before an expansion in a long time. This shows how important the launch of Destiny 2: The Final Shape on June 4th will be for the studio.
