The finale of the ten-year saga of light and darkness has been reached in Destiny 2 and that raises a question: what happens next? Some approaches are already apparent in the game and the developers themselves provide further information.
With Destiny 2: The Final Shape, a long and eventful journey has come to an end (which is also eventful, more on that in our review tomorrow). The question of what happens next now stands like a pink elephant in the middle of the room.
One thing is clear, new content will continue to come and this is already evident in the game. After all, the finale leaves a power vacuum in the universe that will probably not be filled without violence. Bungie is moving away from the classic season system and is instead relying on episodes, each divided into three acts that start about six weeks apart. This will include everything we know from seasons, i.e. story, missions, weapons, mods, ranks and everything that goes with them.
It starts today with Echoes, which is all about the future of the Vex. After that it’s Revenant, which is dedicated to the Fallen, supposedly with a dark fantasy theme and possibly a new mechanic that lets you build potions that give you various buffs. After that it’s Heresy for the Hive, and it’s rumored that the Dreadnought from Taken King will make a return appearance.
The new concept doesn’t sound stupid in the sense that it provides players with new content more quickly and regularly and could therefore reduce the drop in player numbers relatively soon after the start of a season. But what then? Just more episodes?
Apparently not, because in the vlog Bungie mentioned a project called Codename: Frontiers, about which they only said that it would bring something to Destiny 2. There was no mention of a possible Destiny 3. This could fit with earlier statements that Bungie might start a new saga after The Final Shape. What exactly awaits us remains to be seen for now. In any case, the content for the eleventh year of the game is guaranteed.
In the latest Destiny 2 vlog, Bungie takes a look into the future of the game after the conclusion of the saga of light and darkness in Destiny 2: The Final Shape.
