Well, sooner or later this will happen. The Diablo 4 community, always hungry for more and better loot, may have discovered the connection between loot caches… and rats. We’re talking about the rats you see in the game’s dungeons and elsewhere.
Diablo IV has lots of rodents, bugs, critters, and other critters that the game uses to create atmosphere. If you want Tom, you can kill them, but they won’t drop loot or grant any experience points. But what if there are other reasons for their existence?
Probably not, but some players are sure they lead you to loot. It all started with the experience of Reddit user zerger45 posting one of their most popular posts on the Diablo subreddit.
“Well, that sounds really weird,” they said before laying out their theory. “Don’t follow the predetermined path in any dungeon, but follow the mouse. The mouse smells of cheese!”
That being said, zerger45 has been doing this for a while, and has been successful enough to tell everyone that the mouse led them to “multiple legends” in just ten minutes.
“Rats will tell you which group of enemies to kill, and they’ll go where you’re going! It’s true. I’m not crazy!” they exclaim.
After the post was released, many players also said that they had similar experiences. Some have even posted screenshots of their rare loot, which a horde of vermin supposedly led them to.
Another crazy thing is that some players who try to do this after the post goes live are actually directed to the butcher – this roaming boss that always seems to show up at the worst possible time and ruin a player’s day.
So, are rats really going to lead you to a heist? Or are they all snickering to themselves as they lead you to your death at the hands of the butcher? Confirmation bias suggests that both are true in this case. Regardless of what you believe, it’s a surprisingly interesting theory.
