Director wants to see his own film fail – and thus ends his career: Even though it is a masterpiece!

It’s never a good sign when directors don’t want to have anything to do with their films. If film studios get too involved and the project becomes less and less in line with the director’s vision, he can remove his name from the credits and use a pseudonym, but he also agrees not to speak badly about the film and the production.

Not many directors take this route and prefer to vent their anger, which quickly gives them a reputation for being “difficult” – often a career killer. The best example of this is Tony Kaye, a British director who made his first feature film in 1998: “American History X”.

When his first cut of the film was rejected by the studio, a new version was created with lead actor Edward Norton taking control. Kaye, who had already criticized Norton for changing the script on set to suit his wishes, later called Norton a “narcissistic amateur” and stated that Norton’s version of the film was simply re-inserting deleted scenes so that he would appear more often in the film.

Kaye never missed an opportunity to speak badly about “American History X,” even publishing advertisements against the film in magazines and wanted to prevent “American History X” from being shown at film festivals. He also demanded that his name be replaced by the pseudonym “Humpty Dumpty”. When this request was rejected, Kaye sued the film studio – in vain.

Kaye later admitted that he did not see the final version of “American History X” until 2007 and that he now regrets his behavior.

Despite everything, “American History X” was a success, delighting critics and audiences, and could have been the start of a promising directing career for Kaye. Instead, he only made one more feature film in 2011 and has since devoted himself to music videos and short films.

Derek Vinyard is a committed neo-Nazi who is completely convinced of his ideology. When he sees two black men trying to steal his car one night, he brutally kills them both on the spot.

He only receives a three-year prison sentence, partly due to the testimony of his little brother Danny. During his time in prison, Derek begins to rethink his views and regret his actions. When he is released, Derek is horrified to discover that his brother Danny has become more and more involved in the scene.
