The end of account sharing is also imminent at Disney+. After new terms of use had already indicated changes, there is now concrete information.
Disney+ and Netflix are actually competitors, but that doesn’t stop the streaming services from copying profitable corporate strategies from each other. With the end of account sharing, Netflix already made itself unpopular and brought an extremely lucrative subscription model onto the market with the “standard subscription with advertising” – Disney then followed suit shortly afterwards.
But while Disney+ has been offering a cheap subscription with advertising for several months now, account sharing consequences are still a long time coming. In August 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the end of password sharing in 2024, but on the one hand this information was extremely vague and on the other hand it was suddenly supposed to happen in Canada on November 1st, 2023 – exactly then, when Disney+ revised its own subscription models and a new version of the user agreement came into force.
But to this day, subscribers in Canada have been spared any change. A grace period that is about to end. From March 14th, a new user agreement will also apply in the USA, in which account sharing has been clearly prohibited – even earlier if you confirm the new conditions in the Disney+ app beforehand. But when exactly can we expect the end of account sharing worldwide?
“No one who ever streamed me would have believed that – I don’t allow sharing!”
The mere fact that the user agreements clearly define who can share a Disney+ subscription and Disney grants itself the right to restrict access by unauthorized users should not be seen as the starting signal for technical measures that make account sharing impossible .
In Germany were the user agreements changed to this effect in September 2023. There it says:
Unless otherwise permitted by your subscription options, you may not share your Disney+ account with anyone outside your household. “Household” means the set of devices that (1) are or have been used to use your Disney+ Account at your primary private residence and (2) are used by people who live there. If we detect unauthorized account sharing, we may take appropriate technical measures to prevent use of the Disney+ account outside of your household (unless permitted by your subscription options).
Disney therefore has the right to introduce measures against account sharing, but an exact date was not given here. In February 2024, however, Disney investors, and therefore we too, found out when account sharing measures could be expected.
You can still share your subscription until summer
Disney CFO Hugh Johnston announced that Disney+ will offer its own subscription to users who they suspect account sharing from summer 2024. In addition, Disney+, like Netflix, will introduce a paid extension through which a subscription can still be shared with people outside of your own household – the planned price for this remains secret.
An exact date will certainly follow in the coming months, but at least we now know that Disney+ was clearly inspired by Netflix’s approach to account sharing. Anyone who has previously used a free Disney+ subscription and doesn’t plan to pay for the streaming service themselves now has a few more months to enjoy Disney+ easily.
