In an open letter to the fans, the developers at id Software have commented on the future of Doom Eternal. Because the ongoing pandemic has also mixed up the plans for the shooter a bit.
The bad news right at the start: The one that many players have been eagerly awaiting Invasion mode will not appear for the time being. Since you don’t want to let the fans go away empty-handed, you came up with something else.

New single player content planned as a replacement
Since the release of Doom Eternal, fans have been looking forward to the invasion mode. There is no classic multiplayer game like Deathmatch behind it. Rather, you would have slipped into the skin of a demon and, so to speak, penetrated the campaign of another player.
This would have made the story run through for the Doom Slayer a lot more difficult. Unfortunately nothing more will come of it in the foreseeable future. Because the work on this mode turned out to be very complex, and the Corona pandemic slowed progress
In addition, the two story DLCs “The Ancient Gods” Part 1 and 2 met with a very positive response. We were also more than impressed by the hell of a story ending:

Doom Eternals DLC finale is literally awesome
Therefore, the plans are now being turned upside down and the decision has been made to keep the focus on the single player. As a replacement for the invasion mode, there will be the so-called horde mode.
Multiplayer doesn’t go away empty-handed either
Fans of hearty multiplayer matches do not have to do without new content entirely. Because the battle mode should also be revised and, among other things, be given a more competitive, rank-based structure. Besides, it will give a brand new map, on which one has not yet commented on.
The first information about the revised Battlemode and the new map will be available soon – namely at QuakeCon in August. You can find more information about the event in our current exhibition and event overview for 2021.
