We’ve finally seen some gameplay for Dragon Age: Keeper of the Veil, giving us our first real look at the recently renamed Bioware RPG. What is the game like? Well, there’s a cool city, lots of cameos from old Dragon Age characters, and, uh, a lot of running around.
While we saw a trailer and a release window during this weekend’s Xbox Showcase, fans have naturally been waiting for some gameplay, especially those who aren’t too keen on the game Bioware is working on. Based on the initial reactions in the live chat, it looks like the mixed reaction may not be going away anytime soon.

The reveal is about 20 minutes of gameplay from “early in the game,” with some edits made “for brevity and to avoid spoilers.” Basically, we see Rook (the name of the protagonist you’ll be controlling) walking through a city while Solas, your companion from Dragon Age: Inquisition, attempts to perform a ritual that will destroy the city’s atmosphere.
Series stalwarts Varric and Rook charge through a group of demons that drop from the sky in a place that looks much darker and gloomier than what the trailers show, picking up Lace Harding and Neve Gallus on the way and telling the elf that he’s doing something bad.
The main aspect of all of this that seems likely to divide fans is the combat, which often seems to lean more towards straight-up action-RPG-style hack-and-slash than the tactical team management that many people might prefer. That being said, there are some cool abilities on display, and the customizable ability wheel does look like it will give you some control over your companions’ attacks, so that’s a good thing.
That being said, this is only one quest early on, so things will likely become more advanced as the game progresses. Regardless, this game ends with Solas running away after a standoff with Varric, despite the player trying to talk him out of it via one of the few wheel-based dialogue options shown, which elicits some objections and consent notices from Neve and Harding.
