Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct brought interesting news for Dragon Quest fans, as the original trilogy is now getting a more contemporary remake.
Square Enix has announced that the first three parts of the popular Dragon Quest series will be re-released. The first will be Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which will be available as a modernized version of the RPG classic later this year from November 14, 2024. Despite the Nintendo appearance, the game will not only be available on the Switch, but also on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC (Steam, Windows). Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will then continue and complete the trilogy re-release in 2025.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake brings the beginning of the Erdrick trilogy back to life. Revised, colourful HD-2D graphics await you, which are accompanied by other modernised features compared to the original game. The narrative has also been revised.
The new graphics mentioned are intended to combine pixel art with 3D graphics; the user interface has also been improved. The classic turn-based combat system has been optimized and receives new animations, other improvements such as an adjustable combat speed or an option for auto-combat.
Those interested can pre-order a physical and digital standard edition; those who buy in advance will also receive an “all-round carefree package” that includes the following content:

- Magic together x3
There is also a Collector’s Edition for the consoles, which comes as a collector’s box with space for the following remake of Parts I and II and also includes an acrylic block set with characters, monsters and logo, exclusive wallpapers, the above all-round carefree package and also the “Adventurous Accessories” equipment set with in-game items.
