World of Warcraft and Overwatch are very different games, but they all have one problem in common: Both have disappointed many players in recent years.
- World of Warcraft presented a promising addon with Shadowlands, which promised a reunion with beloved characters (Arthas, Uther etc.) and therefore sold 3.7 million copies on the launch day alone – better than any other PC game (!) before it. But the catapult start was followed by long faces: New content took a long time and then didn’t bring what fans had expected. For example, the new villain character of the jailer remained pale.
- Overwatch celebrated its last hero addition when we were just learning the word “pandemic” – in April 2020. Since then, Blizzard has scaled back support to instead focus on development of Overwatch 2, which is still a long way off to this day . For two years there were only balancing patches and recurring events.
Which problems plague Blizzard with World of Warcraft and Overwatch and which course the studio is currently being repositioned to solve these problems – Micha discusses this in the podcast with WoW and Overwatch expert Mary and with service game skeptic Peter.

The new add-on World of Warcraft: Dragonflight shows the beginnings of a rethinking and could form the basis for a kind of WoW 2.0 that no longer gets caught up in nonsensical lore confusion and no longer stacks progression systems on top of each other to use them again in the next expansion to forget. Mind you: could. In order to really breathe new life into WoW, Blizzard might have to change it more. And should like to develop new Warcraft games again.
With Overwatch 2, Blizzard itself has admitted how unhappy it is with its own communication and development progress, so now the PvP content and the promised story missions are separated and published separately. After two years of standstill, this should bring more movement to Overwatch – if it’s not too late.
