What do you think of the idea of playing Dreamcast games on a nifty new platform in 2023? Well, if you just can’t get away from your shutter shadows, Bebo pages, Badger Badger Mushroom songs, or other ’00s folks, you’re probably pretty excited about the revival of Cosmic Smash coming to PlayStation VR2 on June 23rd.
If you’re not familiar with the game, it’s basically a mashup of squash and tennis and Breakout, with some good dance music (this was from the early 00s, yes, so it stands to reason). After an impressive 22 years, the cult Dreamcast title is brought back, kicked and screamed, reimagined for PSVR2 – perfect for a game like this.
And you don’t have to just take my word for it. Matt Golledge and Adam Hassan – tennis professionals and world number one in touch tennis – have demonstrated the appeal of the game to anyone with a tennis connection. Of course, you don’t have to be a professional athlete to enjoy C-Smash VRS, but it might help. Check out their gameplay experience in the video above.
The reimagined title of the game is slightly different from the original Dreamcast title. C-Smash VRS – yes, VRS stands for “VR” and “versus”, because it’s pretty clever – was put together by VR veteran studio Wolf & Wood, which has worked with various licenses before, and really put everything together It does a fantastic job of being part of a small world that lives right in front of your eyes.
