“Dune 2” shows us an epic battle, but the focus is on the love story of Paul and Chani. The director has a precise explanation for this.

The first trailer revealed what awaits us in November 2023. In a new one Vanity-Fair Article director Denis Villeneuve also revealed more about the eagerly awaited sequel that takes us deeper into the sandy dunes of Arrakis.

For Villeneuve, “Dune 2” is an epic action film, but the battle for Spice and the future of Arrakis is too abstract if the audience is not emotionally involved. Therefore, for Villeneuve, the love affair between Paul Atreides and Chani is in the foreground.
Paul’s desire for revenge, Chani’s struggle for her homeworld, and their love for one another are at the emotional core of the sci-fi epic. Villeneuve, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya found it difficult to credibly portray the early days of their relationship.
It was fun to figure out how do they flirt in this futuristic space language? What about a space warrior and the young duke of a planet? How do you show that you like each other? How does that even sound? We were definitely trying to figure out what was funny because we were all stumped. I think that’s as foreign to us as it is to the characters.

Ultimately, that insecurity was key, which begs the question of how such feelings would show with a tough character like Chani. In addition, it must be considered that Frank Herbert’s original book also contained the love affair between Chani and Paul, but did not put the focus of the story specifically on it.
This approach certainly makes sense for the film, as the plot progresses, especially if other books are adapted, the whole story could change if Paul is now portrayed too much as a sympathetic figure.

“Dune 2” has not yet been confirmed, but it is becoming more and more likely. Netzwelt reveals how Paul’s story continues with the Fremen in the sequel.
Part 2 and not a sequel
Villeneuve emphasizes that “Dune – Part 2” is not a second film, but a direct sequel to “Dune – Part 1”. So the plot will seamlessly follow the end of the first part, there is no jump in time and no introduction. Good news for any sci-fi fans planning a “Dune” double feature in the years to come.
Of course, this approach makes sense, after all, the two “Dune” films together tell the story from the first “Dune” novel “Der Wüstenplanet” by Frank Herbert. We will find out how successful Denis Villeneuve’s conclusion of the “Dune” two-parter is in the end from November 2nd, 2023 in the cinemas.
