No, Eddie Murphy wasn’t kidding, Shrek the Fifth is coming to theaters and DreamWorks has confirmed when you can watch it.
Last month, comedian and actor Eddie Murphy claimed that the long-in-development Shrek 5 was finally going to start filming, and there was even a Donkey movie on the way. Of course, Murphy could have been fulfilling his own destiny, but it turns out he was telling the truth – last night, DreamWorks officially announced that Shrek 5 is in the works, and you can expect to see it in theaters on July 1, 2026. Unsurprisingly, the background music of the trailer is Smash Mouth’s “All Star”, the iconic song that appeared in the original animated film back in 2001. The trailer also shows the number 5 made of Shrek’s flesh, which will give me nightmares, so thank you, DreamWorks social media manager.

If you’re wondering if anyone from the original cast will be returning besides Murphy, the answer is simple: yes! Shrek himself, Mike Myers, will be back to play the title character, a rare performance for the actor who hasn’t had much to do since the fourth Shrek the Monsters film in 2010. Cameron Diaz will also be back as Fiona, which is perhaps even more notable since she retired from the industry in 2014, though she’s back to acting in 2022, starring alongside Jamie Foxx in the comedy spy film Back in Action later this year.

Antonio Banderas has yet to confirm if he will return as Puss in Boots, though the character’s 2022 spinoff The Last Wish ends with his return to the Far Far Away Kingdom, which served as the primary backdrop for the second film in the series. Walt Dohrn, writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third and story and voice supervisor for Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek the Fourth, will direct the fifth film.
However, the official confirmation of Shrek 5 did not bring any news about the Donkey spinoff, so if you’re someone who’s desperate to know about the spinoff (I don’t know why you would be), you’ll have to wait a while before hearing more.
