Game Awards 2014: Dragon Age Inquisition

At the very first edition of The Game Awards, the competition for the GOTY title was particularly fierce. Between Bayonetta 2, Dark Souls II, Hearthstone and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, there have been many titles that have shaped the video game landscape. And against all odds, Ultimately, it was BioWare’s RPG, Dragon Age Inquisition, that took home the coveted award. As a reminder, the third part of the Dragon Age license takes us to a bigger Thedas than before. In the shoes of a human, elf, dwarf, or qunari, your goal is simply to save the world and vanquish forever the corruption and demons that have invaded it. To the delight of fans, this episode has revived the origins of the saga while bringing it some more modern mechanics. A successful mix that had harvested the nice score of 17 out of 20 with us

Game Awards 2015: The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

If you’re still hesitant to take advantage of the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt new gen version to finally discover the title, this information may help you take the plunge. In fact, the third work on CD Projekt’s flagship license is 2015’s GOTY. And yet there were major contenders against him, namely Bloodborne, Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Super Mario Maker. But despite everything, it’s the witcher who has managed to ingratiate himself with the video game world. As a reminder, The Witcher 3 offered us to follow the continuation of the adventures of Geralt de Riv. In the midst of an unprecedented war, our witcher goes in search of his adopted daughter, Ciri. The latter is on the run, being pursued by the terrible Wild Hunt. This makes for an epic that is as gripping as it is rich, and it richly deserves it it’s 19 out of 20.

Game Awards 2016: Overwatch

At the History of the Game Awards, those from 2016 are to be marked with a white stone. In fact, this is the only edition where an online multiplayer game managed to claim the precious title of GOTY. A surprise for Overwatch who managed to beat games like Doom, Inside, Titanfall 2 or Uncharted 4. But then what is Overwatch? For those who have never heard of Blizzard’s license (if there is one), a brief synopsis is in order. Overwatch is an FPS action game set in the year 2074. The majority of the experience consists of throwing 6v6 matches while choosing which hero to play as. There are of course many, each with a defined role (attack, defense, armor, support). The goal is simply to complete the objectives before the opposing team. A game “devilly effective” who had received nice 17 out of 20 with us.

Game Awards 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

There are years when it’s hard to imagine how a game could miss the title of GOTY. 2017 is one of them because This year saw the release of one of the biggest video game giants of this decade: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This new opus drastically changed the formula of the Nintendo license, taking us into a gigantic open world that has now become a real reference for the Nintendo Switch and even for the whole industry. All of this allowed us to discover a ruined Hyrule that was delivered to Ganon for almost 100 years. Finally awake, Link had to figure out what happened and save Princess Zelda as usual. A true ode to exploration, this Breath of the Wild certainly left its mark on spirits. Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, PUBG and Super Mario Odyssey therefore stood little chance against anyone who collected 20 out of 20 with us.

Game Awards 2018: God of War

If Santa Monica narrowly missed out on this year’s GOTY title, they can still fall back on 2018’s because it’s not Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Celeste or even Marvel’s Spider-Man, Monster Hunter: World or even Red Dead Redemption 2 that do have collected him. but god of war. The new adventures of Kratos, this time in the heart of Norse mythology, hit the mark. Because of this, the sequel God of War: Ragnarok, released this year, was also expected. In 2018 we discovered a revised gameplay, but above all a smarter Kratos accompanied by his little boy: Atreus. Across the Nine Realms they have taken us on a divine epic that is as epic as it is moving and surprising. A reinterpretation of the franchise that has shaped us so much that it was also able to collect the sacred 20 of 20.

Game Awards 2019: Sekiro Shadows Die Twice

One might have thought that Geoff Keighley’s friend, developer Hideo Kojima, would collect his first GOTY in 2019. But against all odds, It is FromSoftware and Activision’s game, Sekiro Shadow Twice, that won the title. The studio best known for Armored Core and Dark Souls offered us a brand new license with this title. The game took the sophisticated side of Souls and offered a very different atmosphere, taking us to the side of feudal Japan (the Sengoku era to be precise), and doing so in the skin of the samurai nicknamed The “one-armed wolf”. A little anecdote: the title was first announced at the Game Awards 2017 and we could see it taking the prize against Control, Death Stranding, The Outer Worlds, Resident Evil 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a bit like the close circle. In any case, it is largely deserved for the title he had acquired the score 17 out of 20 with us.

Game Awards 2020: The Last of Us Part II

We talked about obvious GOTY above for Breath of the Wild. Do you know that in 2020 the same scenario happened. It’s hard to imagine a game that can compete with the behemoth The Last of Us Part II. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Doom Eternal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, and Hadez were not unworthy, but difficult to compete against Naughty Dog’s license. Highly anticipated, The Last of Us Part II had a profound impact on gamers and the video game industry. Admittedly, it didn’t bring major changes in terms of gameplay, but its narrative and daring direction made it a great title. As a reminder, this second work took place a few years after the events of The Last of Us: Joel and Ellie returned to Jackson to live peacefully in Tommy’s colony. But one event will change everything for them and mark the beginning of a new post-apocalyptic adventure. (rated 19 out of 20 by us).

Game Awards 2021: It takes two

The year 2021 brought us some big releases. A lot of games were pushed back to the following year, so we ended up with a less busy schedule than expected. And inevitably, this could be seen at the time of the Game Awards. Between Deathloop, Metroid Dread, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village, and It Takes Two, it’s hard to predict who the big winner would be, each with their little favorite. Contrary to all expectations, it was Josef Fares’ game that won the bet. And it was all the more surprising that It Takes Two isn’t really the kind of game we usually reward at these ceremonies. The title is indeed a co-op game aimed at regular players and non-players alike. It tells the story of two parents whose couple is in crisis and who find themselves in the shoes of little dolls to reconcile. Touching and varied in terms of gameplay, It Takes Two was a great surprise when it was released. A real little candy to be consumed without moderation, the title had put a little balm on our hearts in the midst of a pandemic. Enough to largely earn his 18 out of 20.

Game Awards 2022: Elden Ring

This year Hidetaka Miyazaki won his second GOTY. He got his first one directing Sekiro, 2019’s GOTY. And at this year’s ceremony, it was her newest baby who unsurprisingly won the title: the Elden Ring. When it was released in February, Souls-Like’s open world was called GOTY. It has to be said that with its very well polished artistic direction and innovative open world design it was a more than interesting proposition. Add to that the already acclaimed Souls gameplay and you have a title in very good position to win the Game Awards. Unfortunately, A Plague Tale: Requiem, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 could not do anything against the collector a very nice 18 out of 20 with us. Never two without three? To confirm the well-known saying, we’ll have to wait and see what Hidetaka Miyazaki’s next baby will be. FromSoftware has already announced the arrival of a new Armored Core during the ceremony.
