In this ELDEN RING: Nightfreg video, we’re going to be taking a look at Wylder and how to play him in combat. We’re going to be going through things like his stats, his skills, what relics to use, what weapons to look out for, and how to use him effectively in a party.
General Description
So if you’re playing Humility in Nightreign and you want to know how to play him—or maybe you just want some tips or overlooked something—this is for you.
Wylder is a great all-around melee character, and he’s particularly good for first-time players—especially melee characters, which usually have a harder time than ranged ones since they’re always in the thick of it.
Stats & What That Means
He’s got a lot of HP, which makes him tanky and hard to kill. He’s also got a decent amount of stamina, which is crucial. However, he has very low FPso he’s not going to be using many weapon skills or casting spells.
Thanks to his high Strength and Dexterityhe can wield a wide range of melee weapons, especially those that deal physical damage.
Many melee weapons scale with STR, DEX, or both, so Wylder is effective with most physical melee builds.
However, his Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane are weak, so spellcasting and magic/holy weapons aren’t great on him. Focus instead on physical, fireor lightning weapons—these usually scale with STR or DEX too.
Like some other characters, Wylder gets a huge HP boost when you level from 1 to 2, so your first priority after landing on the map should be leveling up to 2 as fast as possible.
This makes him significantly tankier and allows you to engage with stronger enemies sooner.
Skills and How to Use Them
Sixth Sense: Passive Ability
Cheat death a single time
Wylder’s skills allow him to cheat death once per life. If he takes a fatal blow, he’ll survive with a sliver of health.
This makes him especially good for new players, who may die more often due to inexperience.
It recharges every time you respawn or rest at a Site of Grace. That means you can use it many times in a single run, making it an invaluable passive for survival.
You should always run by every Site of Graceeven if you’re unsure whether the passive triggered—it may have saved you without you noticing.
Clawshot: Character Skill
Launch grappling claw to rope foes in or move swiftly by retracting
- Pulls small enemies to Wylder.
- Pulls Wylder to large enemies.
- Moves Wylder across terrain for traversal.
It has a cooldown of around 8–9 seconds and can even guard break shielded enemies or kill weak ones. It deals a bit of damage and gets stronger as Wylder levels up.
You can hold the button to aim itmaking it easier to hit fast-moving targets or distant enemies.
Clawshot is great for gap closing—saving stamina you’d otherwise use to sprint. Sprinting into bosses wastes stamina and leaves you unable to dodge, block, or attack.
With Clawshot, you can grapple into melee range without burning stamina, making it a key survival and offensive tool.
Onslaught Stake: Ultimate Art
Powerful single attack that launches an iron stake with great explosion
It charges over time and through attacking or killing enemies. It launches a massive iron stake explosion that deals high stance damage and some regular damage.
It’s perfect for bosses or hard-to-kill enemies because it frequently leads to stance breaksopening enemies up for a critical hit and giving your team a big opening.

You can hold the button to charge itconsuming more of the gauge but increasing both stance and raw damage. It has i-framesso you can safely use it while a boss is attacking.
It’s a great emergency i-frame tool as well as a DPS burst.
That said, it’s also easy to miss—bosses are highly mobile in this game. Charging it can result in the enemy moving out of range, wasting the skill.
You’ll need to learn boss patterns or use it quickly after a Clawshot to maximize impact.
Suggested Weapons & Ideal Run
Wylder should focus on melee weapons—while having a bow for backup is helpful in rare cases, he’s mostly a frontliner. Look for melee weapons with status effectslike:
These effects allow you to apply pressure passivelyeven if you’re dodging or repositioning. In boss fights, this helps your team by stacking DOT or burst effects while you stay mobile or defensive.
Wylder’s ultimate also excels at stance breaksso consider using heavy weapons:
These weapons do massive stance damage with their heavy attacks, making Wylder one of the best characters for stagger setups. Once an enemy is stance broken, everyone’s damage ramps up during the crit animation too—making a key enabler for team burst.
Although not as tanky as Guardian, Wylder can also tank decently. He can use a shield and benefit from blocking—especially if you find a good one.
Don’t ignore shields; being able to block can be life-saving in chaotic situations.
When choosing passives and effectsprioritize:
- Health recovery (on kill, crit, or over time)
- Physical and elemental damage reduction
- Max HP and stamina
- Stamina rain
- Critical strike bonuses
- FP regeneration or pool size (if you rely on weapon skills)
Survivability is more important than raw damage for melee characters in Nightreign. Bosses use large AoEs that often hit melee characters much more than ranged teammates. So being durable lets you stay in the fight longer—and more uptime = more damage.
Suggested Relics
There are a lot of viable relic choices for Wylder.
Early status effect relics like Poison or Bleed help you apply DOTs quickly and reliably, making even your basic weapons deadly.
Keep an eye out for Wylder-specific relics—they’re rare, but powerful.
Beyond those, prioritize relics that enhance:
- Health (flat or regen)
- Stamina (Endurance / regen)
- Damage resistances
- Strength or Dexterity (for raw scaling)
Since Humility can use almost any melee weapon, the relics you choose should complement your weapon choice. If you have a great weapon skill, consider a relic that boosts FP or FP regen to let you use it more often.
Party Composition
Wylder is very flexible and can fit into nearly any group:
- With two ranged characters – He serves as a mobile frontline.
- With a Guardian or Duchess – He becomes a pure DPS or stance breaker.
If you’re playing with a Guardian tank, spec Wylder for offensive play—don’t waste gear slots on shields if someone else is already soaking damage. Instead, focus on stance damage and status buildup.
If there’s no tank in the group, Wylder can also fill that role with the right relics and a good shield. Just don’t expect the same defensive toolkit as Guardian—his survival comes more from aggression and recovery than blocking alone.
Final Thoughts
That wraps up my Wylder guide. I hope you found it useful! There are a ton of great weapons for Wylder, and he can use almost anything effectively—making him extremely versatile. Each run with him can feel completely differentdepending on what gear you find.
Unlike characters like Recluse or Iron Eye—who tend to play the same each time—Wylder’s playstyle can vary drastically based on your weapon and relics. I highly recommend checking out the wiki or visiting the Sparring Grounds to test weapons, learn their movesets, and see what works best for you.
If you have tips, questions, or thoughts about Wylder, drop them in the comments—I’ll do my best to reply!
