News JVTech Electric cars: Volkswagen’s future batteries will be produced in one of Tesla’s favorite countries
Volkswagen does not stand still! After presenting his concept ID. 2all, the German manufacturer has just announced that its next battery manufacturing facilities will be made outside of Europe.
Volkswagen sets out for new horizons
Volkswagen knows where to build its next battery factories, and it obviously won’t be in the old continent. The German giant has been warning for some time that Europe risks being sidelined unless European institutions make a greater effort to favor local manufacturers. Around a year after Wayne Griffiths, Seat CEO, and Thomas Schmall, Seat CEO and head of Volkswagen Components, announced constructiona battery factory in Sagunto
As a reminder, the Joe Biden government in the United States has made it a priority to attract companies that process and recycle materials to make batteries and electric cars. The first results of the plan are already being felt. The examples of the Gigafactory that Tesla will build in Mexico and those that will Volkswagen builds in Canada prove that the plan works. These projects have also accelerated since the American moves as the two countries have very competitive economic deals. allowing them to produce vehicles in the United States and benefit from their economic support.
To Canada for the manufacture of Volkswagen batteries
This decision to leave Europe comes at a time when the Volkswagen Group is making further announcements new small electric models. Le Concept ID. 2all, what we told you about a few days agosymbolizes the direction the German brand is taking. And to produce the batteries for these future vehicles, the manufacturer has therefore decided to install its first gigafactory of cells outside of Europe in Saint-Thomas, Canada.. Canada, which is also one of Tesla’s favorite countries because the Model 3 was the best-selling electric vehicle in Canada in 2022 with around 14,400 units sold.
Our Gigafactory in Canada sends a strong signal: PowerCo (subsidiary of the group) is on the right track to become a global player in batteries. By expanding in North America, we are opening up a key market for electromobility and battery cell production and are driving our global battery strategy forward at full speed. Canada and Ontario are perfect partners to grow our battery and green economy activities as we share the same values of sustainability, responsibility and collaboration. We are committed to being a trusted partner and good neighbor to the people of St. Thomas and Ontario. Thomas small
With the move to Canada, Volkswagen is therefore continuing to implement its global battery strategy. This new plant will primarily supply battery cells for electric vehicles from the various brands in the product group across the Atlantic (Volkswagen ID, Audi E-tron). The first sustainable unit cells will come from the Canadian plant in Saint-Thomas from 2027, and alongside that goal, Volkswagen also aims to become the largest offering of 100% electric vehicles in the United States. The ambitions are clearly presented.
