Elite Dangerous: Odyssey – Space sim becomes a first-person shooter, and it sounds like it
Elite: Dangerous has had a sporting year. The big 2021 expansion Odyssey not only split the community between the platforms, but also caused harsh storms of criticism that continue to this day. The DLC is available on Steam mostly negative
Reviews, in the GameStar test we awarded a disastrous rating of 35 points. Frontier Developments has been patching the wounds for a year to get performance and fan desires under control – but only on PC.
At least since Odyssey there has been a huge difference between the console versions and the PC version, because the addon has not yet been rolled out on PS4 and Xbox – and that will apparently never change.
The PC is finally becoming the primary platform
In the future, new content will only be played on the PC. The console versions are still preserved critical updates
, so you don’t have to worry about server shutdowns and you can count on bug fixes, but neither Odyssey nor upcoming content updates will appear for PS5 or the Xbox Series. This is announced by chief developer David Braben in an official blog post:
It’s no secret that the launch of Odyssey was anything but smooth. This also applies to the division between the console and PC community due to the PC-exclusive release of the addon. Since the release of Odyssey in May 2021, we’ve been working tirelessly to improve the gaming experience on PC. And despite all the successes, we are still a long way from reaching our goal. So far we’ve been developing both the post-Odyssey code for the PC version and the pre-Odyssey version for consoles. For months we have been pondering the best course of action for the future – and it is with a heavy heart that we must now decide to stop console development.
It is simply too complicated to further develop such a complex game with two different code bases. Therefore, in the future, the limelight will only shine on the PC, where apparently the largest player base of Elite: Dangerous is at home anyway.
How do you assess the situation? Are the developers making the right decisions here and do you see the improvements since May 2021 as a clear success? Or do you see the matter as critically as many users in the official forums?
