Reception options at a glance
The best eight teams at the European Football Championship will compete in the quarter-finals in the coming days. You can watch the knockout phase matches for free on TV and via live stream.
In the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Football Championship, the eight remaining teams will compete for four places in the semi-finals. We have not yet seen the death of any of the favorites; two teams, Italy and Austria, were at least somewhat surprisingly eliminated. It was close for England and Portugal, but they still made it to this round in the end.
Top-class football awaits you almost every day this summer until July 14th. The next game of the German national team will take place again on Friday, July 5th. Here the DFB selection will face the co-favorites from Europe. In the meantime, we will show you how the broadcast works and tell you everything you need to know about the tournament.
The good news first: you can watch all of the German national team’s matches on free TV. However, if you want to see all of the games, you have to pay. Similar to club football competitions, several providers now share the broadcast of the tournament.
Which channel is showing the European Championship games in Germany?
You can only watch all 51 matches of the tournament on Magenta TV, Telekom’s TV service. Magenta TV requires a subscription. Prices start at 10 dollars per month. You can watch 34 of the 51 matches for free on ARD or ZDF. This includes the opening match, all other German matches, the semifinals and the final. The national team’s matches will be shown alternately on the two channels. The broadcaster RTL has also secured the rights for 12 more matches.
* Netzwelt may receive a commission from the provider for links on the website.
Who will show the World Cup games in Austria and Switzerland?
As in the previous year, ServusTV and ORF share the broadcasting rights for the 2024 European Championship. The former has the rights for 31 of 51 games and will show, among other things, all of the Austrians’ games, the opening game, the semi-finals and the final. The remaining games are with ORF. The situation is less complicated in Switzerland. All games will be shown there on SRF.
Can I access content on foreign TV via VPN?
As usual, in most cases it is possible to access content from media libraries in other countries via a VPN. If you want to watch all World Cup games broadcast by other countries for free from Germany, you can simply use a VPN to connect to Swiss servers and access the SRF media library. The same also works perfectly from Austria and Switzerland for the ARD and ZDF media libraries.
Of course, this approach also works in other countries with freely accessible broadcasts. But remember that you are in a legal grey area here.
Where can I see the highlights?
The highlights of the games are also summarized on the public broadcasters and on RTL. There you can see all the goals and the most important goals in the media libraries or on other social media channels such as YouTube.
Where can I follow the European Championship on the radio?
You’ll be out and about during the games, but still want to watch all the German games? That’s no problem, of course. For the 2024 European Championship, it’s likely that ARD will provide a live broadcast in its audio library. This can then be accessed online. In addition, some local and private radio stations will certainly offer an EM program at irregular intervals. It’s best to ask your local radio station about this.
Will the European Championship be shown in 4K?
The short answer to this question is: No. In contrast to the last two editions, the European Championship will be shown in HD HDR. This is primarily for financial reasons, but also for practical and technical reasons. You can find out more about this in our article on this topic.
Child-friendly summaries on Toggo
You can follow the summaries of the games on RTL’s children’s program called Toggo, among other channels. The formats are specially edited for children. They give you impressions of the stadium, include various challenges and of course summarize the highlights of the games. You can also find the funniest moments, short interviews and much more on the company’s own website and social media channels.
