PS5 sales in Europe jumped 200 percent last month from below-average figures in January last year. This massive surge made it the top-selling console, beating out the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X.
First reported by Gamesindustry.biz, thanks to the increase in available stock. Just 12 months ago, people were fighting over the product, but buying a PS5 is now so easy that any potential buyer can finally take the plunge.
In terms of PS5 accessories, a total of 1.76 million units were sold in Europe (not considering Germany or the UK), with the PS5 DualSense controller taking the lion’s share. Having said that, while accessory sales were still down 2.1% compared to last January, subscription card sales were also down 4%.
All of this information doesn’t even take into account the UK, where PS5 sales have skyrocketed even as game sales have fallen. So, what does this mean? Well, it’s a clear sign that the supply issues are largely behind us, even now that the PS5 is off the shelves. It’s also worth noting that the PS5 offers more now than it did around launch, with great games like Demon’s Souls Remastered, God of War Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and more.
Whether the PS5 can maintain those numbers, however, remains to be seen. A lot depends on whether Sony will continue to release fresh games that make people willing to spend hundreds of dollars on the machine. The leap could also be due to the consumer base “catching up” to supply — meaning that many people who previously might have wanted a PS5 are now just getting one now that supply issues have eased.
But what do you think of all this? Are these numbers just a blip? Or do you think that momentum will continue through the rest of 2023? Be sure to tell us below! If you want to read more, check out our Thursday Night Rant on why so many online service games are dying.
